Dream car to remain a dream?

I live in the states unfortunately. (No autobahn for me ...) however.. as if thats not bad enough.. Apparently the man in charge wants all manufactuers to have a 35.5 mpg average.

Now.. please.. Don't think that I don't believe in supporting the enivornment. I believe it is a good thing to save electricity, cut down on gas consumption and pollution emissons where ever possible..

However, that doesn't mean I don't still want a Cayman S and then later on possibly a 911 GT2.

As far as I'm concerned the Cayman S has wonderful gas mileage especially for a sports car (20 - 29).. However, I am wondering if sports cars will be exempt? I have nothing against saving the environment.. Hell I'm not even against making sports cars more fuel efficient and eco friendly. However, I am also not for compromising the point of having a sports car, which is to go fast .

So.. do you think I may have to leave my country for a car? XD. I mean I just don't really think its fair to tell people they can't have sports cars.. To me that is sorta like taking away some peoples dreams.

For me I can honestly say owning a Cayman S isn't my *top* priority in life.. but, it is a dream I plan on seeing through.. and I hate it when any goal or dream is taken away regardless of how small because of someone else's agenda.

Just like most "green" ideas this wont work as planned. Last time the government stepped in and made car companies raise MPG this much, more people went out driving. So the savings in MPG per car will be canceled out by people driving more. Until they step in and tax the crap out of gas.

If companies that can't reach 35mpg are not allowed to sell cars in the US at all, then yes you would have to go to another country to get one. But then that would kill off, Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, Lambo and many more. They will probably stick to what they do now, since the gov. loves tax money.

Well to get the most benefit, yes, the US should regulate mileage AND tax gas, like they do in Europe. That will have a double motivation for manufacturers to increase efficiency. But I don't think this is the death of sports cars, as some proclaim. First of all, Porsche will soon be just a brand in VAG/PAG. I'm pretty sure that they will be treated as a single manufacturer then and the efficiency will be spread across Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat, etc. The other brands, with their far greater numbers will pretty much determine the groups efficiency levels.
Also, there might be less strict rules for small volume manufacturers down the road.

I don't know much about the US policy, but did the government consult any engineers before setting this target? Did the car companies have a say in it?

Yaris? Nah forget it.

Get a Jetta TDI for the week days and the Porsche for the weekend. If you really want to save petrol, get a diesel.

The gov. controls both GM and Chrysler they don't care what can and can't be done. When was the last time the gov. did anything correctly?

I don't think the car companies had any say, even if they were given any say I don't think they would dare speak their minds.

Erm. I have no desire to make this thread to deeply political.

The ONLY politics I want in this thread are those necessary and mandatory for the discussion. :/. I personally feel that *if* politics are going to directly affect my desires to own a car then I feel it is safely under "general discussion about cars"..

I'm not trying to be an annoyance here but, I do feel political discussion is fair game so long as it stays on cars . I also feel its important to point out that there is no flaming going on which is a major reason why political topics are avoided in the first place... *IF* this becomes a napalm drenched war then I can't complain if its closed or receives warning.

However, so long as this remains civil I don't see a problem.

Thats actually already my plan. I will probably drive the Porsche everywhere for the first thousand miles to break it in.. However, after that I'll probably drive my yaris most places like shopping, and what not. And then break out the Cayman for a night on the town or just a really fun sunday drive . *maybe* back and forth to work every so often (depending on where I end up working and what their parking lot/garage is like lol).

I can honestly say I'll want it to last and it will be pretty well taken care of though . Plus (hopefully) by having the yaris insurance/gas will stay on the lower end because it will be my "primary car" lol.
