  | British Motor Show cancelled as recession bites  The British International Motor Show has been cancelled for the first time since 1939 as the gloom engulfing the industry deepened. By David Millward, Transport Editor Last Updated: 1:38PM GMT 19 Mar 2009 Months of plunging sales, production cutbacks and redundancies led car makers to scrap the event. The decision was taken by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders following lengthy talks with car firms. Car makers are pleading with the Government for support for an industry on which an estimated 800,000 jobs depend. So far Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, has announced a £2.3 billion aid package. "The British International Motor Show is the UK's largest consumer exhibition, hugely popular with the public, and has been attracting increasing numbers of visitors over recent years, making the decision to cancel the 2010 show an extremely difficult one," said Paul Everitt, the SMMT's chief executive. "However, the global credit crunch has placed the automotive sector under unique pressure and has created a level of uncertainty that deters manufacturers from committing to large-scale, international events." | As disappointed as I am, I saw this one coming. Most luxury manufacturer nowadays opt for more private functions specifically targeting potential customers rather than the mass. |
