Diesels don't have a throttle valve/butterfly valves.

As for this debate, it is just impossible to judge which manufacturer makes the best diesel.

Re: Motor Trend - Who makes the world's best diesels, GM or Mercedes?

Audi and Merc both make excellent diesels with Merc, in my opinion, having the upper hand in the engineering quality stakes.

But, if you're looking for a diesel engine that blends driver enjoyment, sportiness, refinement and engine character together with the established appeal of modern diesel propulsion then the best mass-market diesel engine is BMW's straight six 3.0 litre with one or two turbos. It's the best I've tried and I've tried pretty much all of them.

Re: Motor Trend - Who makes the world's best diesels, GM or Mercedes?

With all due respect to the North-Americans in this forum, but why your car magazines often come up with pointless questions like these?

I remember in 2005, Edmunds posted an article asking which one was a better deal: Cobalt SS vs SL 65 AMG? What the *eff* was that all about?!

As I said in my post, GM diesel engines are made by VM Motori in Italy in partnership with Fiat. The diesel engines used by Opels, Vauxhalls, Saabs and now even Cadillacs are actually supplied by Fiat.

^^^ Obviously because its geared towards the U.S. market. There are no diesel Audis or BMWs on sale here at the moment. Only Mercedes and VW.

Well, I don't know the exact name in English but this piece (that is in the intake) recently broke and went into the cilinders in a 320d (150hp) owned by a guy in a forum I visit:

A lot of turbos broken in early 136 and 150 hp Compact and E46 models too.

I have also read a lot people complaining about excesive oil consumption in VAG's 2.0 TDI and many cases of gaskets saying goodbye.

Also, I share a forum with a Merc's salesman and he never ever recommended the 400 CDI engine because based on their experience at the dealership it wasn't exactly a very reliable engine.

The old 2.5 TD engine made by VM Motori and mounted in the Chrysler Voyager and the Jeep Cherokee in Europe was a horrible too.

While the BMW unit is sporty, I agree with Raoul. Nothing touches the MB diesels for refinement.
