Police: Failed Carjacker Couldn't Drive Stick Shift - 03-28-2008, 05:13 AM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A West Palm Beach man was arrested shortly after being released from jail Tuesday morning after police said he made an embarrassingly unsuccessful attempt to carjack a woman in the jail's parking lot. "There was a struggle. The guy was able to get the keys away from her and put them in the ignition, but it was a five-speed shift and he didn't know how to drive it, and that's why he couldn't get away from the parking lot," Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokesman Paul Miller said.

Miller told WPBF that Frank Singleton, 21, was arrested early Tuesday morning by Riviera Beach police on a misdemeanor trespassing charge and was released a few hours later on his own recognizance after making his first appearance before a judge. Singleton then ran into the parking lot of the Palm Beach County Jail and attempted to steal a silver Nissan 350ZX from a 23-year-old woman, according to a police report.

Miller said the woman was at the detention center to visit someone and had attempted to jump back into her car when Singleton approached; yelling at her to give him the vehicle.

Singleton later told investigators that he wanted to steal the car because he did not want to walk home, according to the report. "We can't put ourselves in the mind of somebody like this. He later told a deputy who was doing the investigation, 'I just didn't feel like walking,'" Miller told WPBF.

According to a police report, Singleton pulled the woman out of her car and started the vehicle, but was unable to leave the area because he could not drive a manual transmission.

Miller said that Pastor Leo Krug, who regularly comes to the jail to mentor prisoners and was who walking through the parking lot at the time, saw the altercation and ordered Singleton out of the car using his firearm.
Singleton exited the car and laid face-down on the ground until a nearby deputy arrived and placed him under arrest.

Miller told WPBF that, though the altercation became physical, nobody was injured.

"This happened at quarter to 12, in broad daylight, with other people in the area. It shows the brazenness of some of the people that we have, and luckily for us, nobody was seriously injured."

Singleton is now charged with carjacking. He remains in the Palm Beach County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Miller said the woman was "pretty shook-up by the experience" but was not injured.

Hilarious. I remember years ago there was a similar story. The carjacker tried to jack a Saab. The owner had just sat down inside his car and then it happened, but he hadn't started the car yet. The carjacker demanded the keys, but the dumb arse couldn't find the Saab's ignition!!!!

When I got my Subaru, my friend Derek from overseas joked that I bought the best security device you can have in the States: a clutch pedal.
