Why do you expect SO MUCH? - 08-10-2007, 01:07 PM

Ok after being on these German car forums I have notice a lot of people have issues with the quality of German cars. Either it is something concerning the wood, interior setting or even the quality of the material use?

Are you expecting to much or to little?

What level of quality are you looking for?

Some of the concern I have heard have been a little to much. I is almost like you expect them to use GOLD or Platinum material.

Should you expect More or Less from the Germans?

Please tell me your opinion!

On one hand, people bitch about German cars beeing too expensive and that their quality isn't better than that of the Japanese and on the other side, they bitch about German carmakers for using cheap materials to keep the cost as low as possible. Now, you figure it out what people really want!

You wanna see some ridiculous stuff, got to MBWorld.org. Some of those MB owners are just plain stupid IMO.

Yes, it seems as though I hear people complain over pointless things.

I know several Benz owners and they have only complained about the cost of the parts. They are fine with MB quality and I have been in several MB and I see no problem with their materials used.

Much to do about nothing if you ask me.

I wish some more of the members on this site would give us their views. I keep hearing so many complains around this forum of this quality issue.

Many of us spend a lot of time in our cars. This alone is reason enough for me to want that the materials which surround me look and feel nice. Furthermore, high-quality materials and proper workmanship give an impression (I know it's nothing but an impression) of quality; the sort of feeling that the thing isn't going to fall apart the second you drive out of the showroom.

To go into specifics - I sat in a previous-gen ML at the Merc dealership. The dashboard looked like something I might come up with if I tried to construct my own car. Poor workmanship and cheap materials. Now, if I were to spend a the amount of money required to buy an ML on anything, I'd expect much better quality than what I saw there. (Other MB's have been much better.)

I've only bitched about the interior quality of the X3... and that was fixed with the facelift.

After that, I think all german brands have top notch interior quality (some slightly better then others, but all top notch) for their respective classes. As I expect based on the price of their cars and so to be able to say that the GCs are among the best.

But that's when talking about the interior quality.

Build quality is not that simple and another matter.

But I'm a little confused about what is defined as "quality" in this thread.

Attention to details and the simplification of the control system.

A good example is a friend of mine whom I convinced to buy an X5 over the Acura MDX is having problem with AC control.
This is a vehicle that is barely two weeks old, and the AC control stopped functioning yesterday. I feel really bad because I know he would have gone with the MDX if not for the role I played, and that is embarrassing. I spent almost 30 minutes trying to get it to work without success.
He had to drive his old civic to work today because it is extremely hot here.

So, attention to details, and simplifying those controls will reduce some of the issues.

I think that as consumers we have the right to complain about the quality in a specific automobile; after all, If I'm buying a car worth 60k (for example) I certainly have the right to expect high quality craftsmanship.

Absolutely.
Considering how much consumers pay for these vehicles, you will expect the final finish to be of high quality. That also includes all the electronics gadgets.
