Red face Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

I'm told the current trend going on in Detroit is this crossover thing. But I haven't got a clue what a Crossover is.

Please, someone care to explain to me what on earth is a Crossover?

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

Crossover is an automobile with a sport utility vehicle appearance but is built upon a more economical and fuel-efficient unibody construction.

My vision of Crossover was always like something above Audi Allroad and beneath Audi Q7...It has no sense, both the crossover thing and my explanation, but whatever.

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

A cross over is a mix between different type(Sedan, station wagon, SUV, pickup, coupe and hatchback.

That's my definition

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

Hmm, interesting question. With all those new car types it is quite difficult to define them, so the best way to understand is by examples.

As far as i am concerned the best examples of a crossover car are Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70. Correct me if i am wrong.

Click here for wikipedia's definition of crossover

Chrysler Pacifica was among the first crossovers in US

Acura MDX is also referred to as Crossover SUV.

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

It's marketing BS used to sell SUV's and minivans to people who don't like the image connotations those two types of car have.

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

A crossover car to me is when it straddles two or more segments of cars - for instance, SUV + coupe = X6.

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

Usually the term "crossover" refers to a vehicle that derives from an SUV or MPV, yet has characteristics of vehicle from other segment.

Eg. MPV + wagon, MPV + SUV, SUV + coupe, MPV + coupe, MPV + hatch etc.

Re: Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "CROSSOVER"?

Luw said it best imo! It doesn't have to be a SUV mixed with something else per say. It can be any type of car mixed together.
Most of the time now though, it's a SUV mixed with either a stationwagen, or a coupe or a hatchback

Well they are crossovers for sure, but cars like the Mercedes CLS and R-class can be called crossovers too imo. And the upcoming X6 obviously
