I would be amazed if Renault could even comprehend how to build a luxury car to compete against the Mercedes S class and BMW 7er. | | | | | Aficionado

I think that the Jaguar officials have the knowledge. Now if Renault provides the money, then why not? | | | | | Trendsetter

Do you really think Jaguar can do it? ...I guess you are right about the money but I really wonder if Jaguar can do it -- it will be interesting to see what happens. | | | | | Aficionado

I am totally convinced that Jaguar has the potential to be a be a real competitor in the luxury car market. Apart from the X-Type that is sith, the XJ and XK are great models. It's undeniable that the XK has a very nice design, and good enough quality, and so goes for the XJ which also has aluminum frame and a great tradition.
Yet Jaguar needs more models that will add to the brands prestige and will help in gaining sales. Also i think they need a better dealer network (there is only one dealer here for 10 million people, and Jag. has pretty nice sales). Off course their cars need a lot of improvement quality and mechanical-wise.
The point is that without money nothing can be done. If Renault wants to make money out of Jaguar then they have to invest a lot of time and money on it, and the results won't be immidiate. Such a turn over will take much time. But i am 100% sure that they can do it. At least they got the name/tradition and that's something.
My only problem with Renault buying Jaguar is the fact that Renault isn't in a very good situation either and i don't think that such an investment would work out in the end... | | | | | Contributor

All I'll say is that Ford would be really foolish to sell off Volvo. Land Rover and Jaguar are going to be a constant drain, but selling Volvo would be a mistake. It appears that Volvo is the only one of their foreign brands that has ever made any money and their safety engineering expertise is also valuable. Besides they share of lot of the same platforms and components now. Don't sell Volvo, Ford.

Jaguar has it good here. It shares the dealership with Bentley, and yet sales are dismal. | | | | | Aficionado

Originally Posted by atuv OK where are all the patriotic brits now when u need them?! | Hey we've come to answer your call, the only problem is we are few on a german car appreciators blog! I definately think Jaguar and Land Rover have what it takes to be successful, they just need the right direction from the top. Take a look at the Range Rover, investment and expertise from BMW, injected into LR has resulted in a highly desirable, critically acclaimed sales success. With Ford they went downhill, the Ford-developed cars are heavier then the RR even though they are smaller in every dimension AFAIR. The so-called RR sport is barely quicker than a middle range X5/ML/Cayenne.
With the aluminium chassis devlopment at Jaguar, I would say they have the technical know-how and are also moving their game on wrt design (see XK, XF). The problems are of image (seen as fuddy-duddy and deservely so, just look at the X-type and XJ), and the fact that changes being made now will not make an effect on their bottom-line for maybe upto 5 years. Jaguar will continue to haemmorage cash, whilst still needing vast cash investment, in order to bring them out of the rut they are now in. Ford could have avoided this by investing earlier, when they had the resources to do so, but the situation is as it is. The best thing for Jaguar is a company that can afford to invest in new platforms/models and eventually bear the fruits. Sort of like Aston Martin, but on a far bigger and ultimately more costly scale.
