2010 Opel Astra OPC/ Vauxhall Astra VXR




We have seen a number of Opel Astra prototypes out testing wearing some extremely irritating disguise, but we are yet to see the hot OPC version hit the streets. Fortunately to whet our appetites in the meantime, the good folks over at autoexpress have done a rendering of what the final model may look like – although in our opinion the front fascia design is way off.

The Astra OPC (dubbed the Vauxhall Astra VXR in the UK) will hit the dealerships in 2010 which is around the same time its main rivals (Ford Focus ST and Golf GTI) are also set to reach the market.

The hot hatch will get a sportier body kit over the regular version resulting in a much lower ground clearance and ultimately improving the driving dynamics of the vehicle. A set of 19 inch wheels and attention seeking exterior colors help finish the look. The sporty theme continues inside with sport bucket seats, a chunky sports steering wheel and chrome pimped accessories

For the new generation the 237bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged unit will be replaced by a new 1.8-liter version to reduce emissions, but engineers will still look to maintain the power with a bit of in-house tuning with suggestions of a 240bhp output for the new unit. 0-60mph time will be just shy of 6 seconds with a top speed of around 150mph.

Rumour has it that we could even see a diesel OPC version as well with the 160hp 2.0-liter direct-injection unit from the Insignia making a step down, but a diesel powered OPC just doesn't sound right to us.

With the regular Astra set to debut at the Paris Motor Show this September, we will probably have to wait until sometime next year for the OPC's debut, our bet's on Geneva.

Yes. I have heard from many people that the torque steer is ridiculous in the current generation. Still, would love to drive one!
