That’s right. Opel will launch a new high-performance version complete with a twin-turbocharged AWD powertrain. The new model will be available in sedan, hatch and estate bodystyles and there are rumors a new coupe version based on the GTC concept (pictured) will eventually be launched as a successor to the Calibra. The cars will also be sold in the U.S. as the next-generation Saturn Aura, although final styling is expected to be changed slightly to suit American tastes. Mechanicals are based on GM’s FWD Epsilon 2 platform so expect more space and a stiffer chassis than the compared to the current model. New to the lineup will be an electronic controlled AWD set-up and limited-slip differential. Power will come from a 300hp twin-turbocharged 2.8L V6 petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual. The performance flagship will likely be called the VXR, reports AutoExpress, and it will have a unique sports bodykit, V-shaped grille and blacked out xenon headlights. It will ride on 19in alloys and a lowered suspension kit as well. Click here to see a preview of the final product in our previous story. They're going upmarket. I kind of feel that this suits Opel better since in the past they were always a competitor to BMW and Mercedes in Germany. It's only in the 1980s that they began to go downmarket and totally abandoned the luxury or premium segment (well except for cars like the Senator).
