(Everything on the W201 was new: the shape, the suspension and the format. It was not a cheap car, but it was safe. And the 2.3-16 was the perfect car for the return into the Touring Car Sport scene.)
(At the beginning traditional Mercedes clients had to adapt and get used to the look of the new car. Standing on its 14" rims was a narrow and boxy little car. The only chrome could be found on the grille: and that was it. Flat hubcaps made out of grey plastic and a high, boxy rear all helped the aerodynamik efficiency of the 190, which had nothing in common with the "190" SL from the '50s.)
(The name "190" came from the smallest engine available which was labelled with the code "200". Under the hood was a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine that was developed out of the M102 from the W123 230E. The engine was available in carburator form with 90-horsepower (190) and with fuel injection, where it developed 122-horsepower (190E).)
(Mercedes engineers had developed a completely new suspension for the Baby Benz: the 5-link suspension. This enabled the car to be more stable in corners and at higher speeds. It took Daimler engineeres 10 years to develop this revolutionary suspension with the first prototypes arriving in 1972!)
(The technology and quality that went into the 190 made it very expensive. A 190E in December of '82 cost 27,741 DM - 1,200 DM less than a W123 230E with 136-horsepower. But thanks to 10 kg less weight and a coefficiency of drag ratings of 0.33, the little 190 was quicker off the line - and handled better than the 230E.)
(A sensation appeared in 1983, when the 2.3-16 was shown to the public. The 2.3-l 4-cylinder engine developed 185-horsepower and enabled the 190E 2.3-16 to reach a sensational top speed of 230 km/h. Even before the car was introduced to the public, Mercedes had achieved a number of speed and world records at Nardo. For example, the 2.3-16 absolved 50,000 kilometers with an average speed of 247,9 km/h.)
(With the 2.3-16, Mercedes re-entered the Touring Car scene at the Nürburgring with 21 identical 190E's. Incidentally, the race was won by Ayrtn Senna, the latter Formula One world champion.)
(The traditional combination of Mercedes and Diesel couldn't be left out. In 183 the 72-horsepower 190D with a new 2-liter diesel engine appeared followed almost two years later by the 190D 2.5, a 5-cylinder design with 90-horsepower. In September of 1987, the 2.5 Turbo appeared. Delivering 122-horsepower to the rear wheels, the 192 km/h fast 2.5 Turbo was the speed king amongst the conservative 190 diesels.)
(Since 1985 the allure of 6-cylinder engines could also be found in the Baby Benz. The 2.6 delivered 166-horsepower (160-hp with a catalytic converter) and cost a whooping 44,289 DM. It got more expensive with the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, a car that was built 502 times. The blue-black racing 190 was characterized by a 235-horsepower engine, wild wings and 17" rims.)
(The facelifte ocurred in 1988. Wider side planks (Sacco-Bretter), lowered bumpers and more interior space through the use of newly design seats all gave the 190 a new lease on life.)
Zum Schluss gab es 1992 drei Avantgarde-Sondermolle mit Metallic-Lack und eigenständigen Sitzbezügen: Den 190E 1.8 Verde in Rot, den 190D 2.5 Verde in grün und den 190E 2.3 azzuro in Blau. Mit Nummer 1.879.629, einem 2.6 in silbermetallic ging die Produktion des 190 zu Ende, es wartete die C-Klasse (W 202) mit mehr Platz, serienmäßigen Airbags und – ab 1996 – einem T-Modell.a (Near the end, in 1992, the 190 was available in three special edition colors: the 190E 1.8 Verde in red, the 190D 2.5 Verde in green and the 190E 2.3 azzuro in blue. Production ended after 1,879,629 190s had been produced. The 190 was replaced by the W202 C-Class.) | | | | | The Following 7 Users Say Thank You to cawimmer430 For This Useful Post: | | | Contributor

Though it was painfully slow in most forms and impossible to sit in backseat wise, I adored this little car. One of my best friend's mom had one. We'd ride to school in it. Here is a perfect 190E specimen: - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER
This special edition appears to have the same seats the W126 had. Imagine a current C350 with S550 seats!

I am lucky enough to have an example of this fine little car. While it certainly has it's problems like any other 17 year-old-car, it still look great in my eyes. Viva the 190E! | | | | | Devotee

It's so true. The mercedes 190 is probably one of their best cars. I have a
'93 190E sportline that my brother almost completely destroyed. I have to replace almost everything in the car, but ya know what? I love it... it's not a BMW, it's not a crazy skyline... it's a 190E... and it's just a great car to be in.
Now granted what I'm driving isn't exactly the same as the car in this article... you get the idea... | | | | | Fanatic

M | We used to have one, black and grey with the 2.6L I-6. Probably one of the most refined engines I have ever experienced. The car felt swift when pushed and the engine gave a nice sound in the upper RPMs. This car was without a doubt Mercedes "little tank," and from what I remember it felt way more solid than our current W210. Yes, the back was completely useless but we still managed. | | | | |
