My friend's father imported a W124 E420 in the mid-1990s and it wasn't unreasonably expensive. Importing to Hong Kong causes a bit of headache though.
I find a number of 280SEs in very good condition, not just at Mirbach but in Canadian ads and dealers as well. Any W116 isn't half-bad as you say. I've seen 280SEs or other non-6.9s sell for more than a 6.9 by a few thousand dollars. These non-6.9s seem to have been kept in better condition. Ideally, I'd start the collection with the W116, then I'd look for a W123 and a Peugeot 604, the car in the avatar. | I read that 6.9's are a pain to take care off because of stuff like the pneumatic suspension etc. Plus, the fuel consumption is attrocious.
Best of luck with your search. You might also want to try contacting the British magazine "Mercedes Enthusiast". They regularly have ads in their magazine of RHD 450SEL 6.9's (which you could use for Hong Kong) and they can put you in touch with the owners who're trying to sell them. | | | | | Trendsetter

I think there are three or perhaps four 6.9s still around Hong Kong today. Indeed I've read they are more difficult to take care of and most of it is due to that suspension. My concern is whether I can find quality technicians to fix it if problems arise. I don't mind the fuel economy so much because I won't drive it in the winters in Canada. I'd drive it a lot more if I had it in Hong Kong. I'll keep Mercedes Enthusiast in mind, cawimmer.
Roberto, what do you think about buying an old car in Hong Kong? I have a covered parking space, but the garage is not climate controlled and the temperature, humidity soar at certain times of the year. | | | | | Trendsetter

Certainly, a climate-controlled parking garage would be preferable but remember that these old Benzes were built to last - the W123, for example, can still be found in daily use in some of the most inhospitable locations on earth. I think it would be best to get advice from somebody who has much more knowledge about these things than me. | | | | | The Photo Phanatic

MB were still building quality cars back then.
I made a mess of things in the stock market these past two days based on my own greed and procrastination. Funny, last week I could do no wrong. Everything I bought went up. | | | | | Executive

Actually, The Artist, I made a mess because I didn't sell some derivative positions even though I was up 50 percent, but I was occupied with another useless phone call. Now, everything's been reversed and I'm down. | | | | | Member
