Whats your idea of having your (total) cash on a card instead of paper money in your wallet, I believe this is the next wave of the near future but whats your opinion of the idea, it might have it`s problems but it would cut down on a lot of currant problems we have with the paper notes. Remember that there are a number of ways to secure such a cards. Please read the article first then give your educated opinions on the matter.

You`ll always get your receipt, thats proof of your purchase. I hate getting receipts for bottled water though.

lOl, I do to but I think it`s time for a change. Sometime those bills just fall out of my wallet when I need to get the notes I want, then people look all in my wallet to see what I have in there, that bugs my a good deal!

Smartcards are pretty cool. We have something like that for the transport system - instead of using coins, we now use cards which we tap upon entry and upon exit from a train or bus. The appropriate amount will be deducted according to the distance travelled.

Isn't that article 10 years old?

Anyway, there was an experiment with a smartcard system, basically it meant you'd need to use an ATM to put funds on the card, which you then could use to pay... of course, since almost everyone here has a debit card, the system didn't really take off... unlike the smartcard system for buses which was first implemented here in 1992.

Perhaps I should have rephrased the header of this thread. I was looking for the idea of all your cash being put on a card. When I googled up the idea "smartcards" came up. My idea is basically a cashless society and how we would handle such a change.

Re: Smartcards: money on cards! - 12-06-2006, 05:18 PM

We have a kind of pre-paied "smartcard" here, and we also have the great credit cards.

But, i hate them and i don't use neither of them. And probably i wouldn't put all my money in a card and use only that!

There are many reasons for that.
1. I want to feel my cash. I want to see my notes, smell them, touch them. ANd the most important is that by opening my wallet i know how much money i have or i can spend. but with a card? will i have to go to the nearest ATM?
2. Security reasons. I learnd not to trust every new technology. Even cars, that exist for >100 years do break down! With such a card i don't feel safe.
3. If someone steals my wallet he will steal no more than 100eur. But if he steals my smartcard? I don't want even to think of it...
4. Using cash is easy. You give the note/coin, you get what you want. But if you are using a smartcard you may have to do some steps, like showing some kind of ID, getting receipts, then checking your bills, etc and it's complex

I can continue all night long but i think you got my point(s)

I already use a debit card for most everything, but a big benefit of cash is that it cannot be traced at all, also it is much easier to go into debt using electronic money.

OK. I wouldn't mind, I rarely use cash anyway so it wouldn't be much of a change for me. Needless to say, I disagree on just about all of the points Giannis made.
