Post College - 04-24-2006, 12:04 PM

Next year I will be packing my bags and crossing the Atlanting to study business at College in America. What I wonder is if there are any college or ex college students at GCZ who have experiences and views that they would like to share. For you who wonder I'mplanning on applying to one of the Ivy-League school though I would like to know if there is a huge difference in the edcucational standard between those schools and the community ones.

Thankful for answers.

I'm finishing up my freshman year in college right now. What did you want to know?

Like night and freakin' day.
If you are talking about universities such as Brown or Columbia or Harvard then you'll be exposed to the best and brightest minds
in the world...this includes your fellow students who will be monstrously smart and competetive.

I'm thinking about applying to Standford and offcource other less prestigious schools. What I would like to know is if the studies much more difficult than what they are in high school and the negative aspects of living at campus.

Many times schools ask that incoming freshmen spend a year in dormitory living. It gives the school a chance to charge you extra money (reality check) and your freshman year turns into a total indoctrination period into the ethos of the school.
You should definitely cover your --- by applying to 4 or 5 schools simultaneously. By all means check into the availabilty of scholarships- especially for your first two years while you are hitting the books hard.

The school I teach at runs freshman year (foundation program) like a military bootcamp...and I am cool w. that because it instills academic rigor into students.
Most good schools will flog you with work throughout your college years.
The model that I see lately is that a bachelors degree increases your annual income by $20,000.
A masters degree another $20,000, tho I assume your educational motives are pure and money doesn't matter and, of course, those figures might be propaganda from the admissions dept.

Re: College - 04-25-2006, 01:23 AM

How funny, I'm already thinking about grad school.

Find out what schools have the best programs that you're interested in, factor in any other important variables that will influence your decision making and go from there. To answer your Q, Ivy league schools have cranked out a lot of the top notch CEO's and other notable individuals that can be found in a wide array of professions throughout. However going to an Ivy league school doesn't garauntee you sucess in life, but it can most definately get you off on the right foot once you're done. Be sure to discover and become involved in school activities, especially w/ alumni, as those are the guys who are in the places where you want to be and will help you get there. I have cousins that have gone to Yale and Brown, uber smart and extremely focused indivduals that are doing quite well at the moment.

I'm currently a sophomore at my college, but if you want to go to an Ivy, be prepared to work really hard! If you graduate, especially from Yale (my personal favorite, being a CT resident) or Harvard, you'll go wicked far.

And Yale and Harvard have a great rivalry. Big American football rivalry. Was it you who said you wanted to play American football?

Interesting Luw. I'm interested to study in the US as well, but in 3 years' time. That's because I'm in a pre-university school (we call it Junior College) and after that, I've got compulsory military service.

I'm interested in NYU, majoring in journalism. Any feedback?

Also, what are the best schools in the Humanities? Like for example, courses in Political Science, Journalism, Mass Communication, that sort of thing. And is SAT is the only pre-requisite? Here in S'pore we do the A Levels.

Thanks a lot guys.
