I felt the same way until my pc started to crash all the time...despite firewalls/ spyware....you name it.
So last year I went out and got an G5 i-Mac, loaded it up w. extra memory-
and I got a 30gb i-Pod photo to go with it. I have a fairly big rock and jazz collection (60's jazz and alt. rock) and loaded them into the i-pod along with 200+ photos from my i-photo cache. I also got an Altec-Lansing IM-7 i-pod boombox that really kicks.

The i-Pod...and all MP3 players are so cool. You can program your player for a variety of different moods or just let it shuffle thru on its own. I rarely download music from i-tunes because of it's relatively low fidelity...tho some people don't seem to mind it or notice it. Right now I have 2078 songs on it..including symphonys, long jazz cuts, etc- and I'm at the halfway point in available memory.

The unfortunate thing is that only the newest cars have a line in somewhere on the dashboard for MP3's...to convert my BMW costs around $200-250- which is a real pain in the butt...and I've put off doing anything about it.

But anyway- once you have one- it pays for itself in fun. I'm listening to music and enjoying it a lot more than when I was just playing cd's.
And I'll never go back to pc now that I'm using Apple- that was the real revelation for me. Stable systems- super easy to use. And their design looks so great.

Go ahead buy the Vision, it's excellent in almost every way But the controls are pretty bad imo. I find the Ipod Video better overall though, but I'm pretty biased afterall.

I've always been an Ipodfan and am now on my fourth Ipod, Black Nano 4gb.

Don't have one; though I did get my Nokia 6230i in part because it can play mp3s. However, it only has basic software ability, and you have to use the included Nokia headphones (apparently you can buy an adapter to use your own 3.5mm jack headphones in, they must have learnt the hard way that people don't want to use the stupid Nokia headphones, and these days I think most music capable mobile phones use the standard 3.5mm socket). What's more, the included memory card is only 32MB, I think.

I don't need heaps of music - even half an hour's worth would be fine, since I rarely take public transport anyway, and in the car I listen to CDs. However, I've found that I can't be bothered using it - when I'm out, I relish the chance to be 'in' the outside world, listening to the sounds of life, without creating my own music-sphere and living in there..

Just my opinion

I don't have an mp3 player right now. I have a SONY Walkman that supports mp3s but i don't use it anymore. Now i use my cellphone, a NOKIA 9300 as an mp3 player. When in the car i listen to CDs, but i spend much time a day walking so i think that some music can make walking a bit better.

And Snake, sometimes sounds of life are very annoying. And i prefer my music to the most sounds of life in the city...

I bought an iPod shuffle sometime last year and love it to death.

I don't use it like I once did now that I live in LA (not a pedestrian's city by any means), but when I was biking around Berlin the thing was indispensable. It's featherweight, tiny and practically damageproof.

The best thing about the shuffle is that you get the iPod chic factor without actually caring much about it getting damaged, lost or stolen (like at the gym). I bought the thing for $99, but can be had for $69. There's also a slew of similar micro-mp3 players which can be had for just about the same or less.

Thinking of buying a Nano, but I'm not sure about the scruff/fragility factor.

My partner just got a 2gb black nano....and they are so cool. I set up her i-tunes on my G5 by adding another user option..simple process so that we have our own music files on the same computer.
Scruff factor on the nano is still delicate - as with all i-Pods...but the nano is said to be the most durable of them all. Had a friend who actually backed over his nano (!!!) and it still played fine. Needless to say it looks awful.
