Favourite Investments! - 02-27-2006, 09:36 PM

This is a thread I've wanted to start for a long time, but kept forgetting. What's everyone's favourite investment in this economy? Gold, oil, metals, a particular company's stock?? If anyone names a stock they own, great! I won't accuse anyone of pumping their stock...

Is anyone invested in shares of auto manufacturers?

Well I'm not as savvy as you on these matters Ray, but right now gold and palladium seem like a fairly secure investment in these uncertain times. I wish I had invested in Japanese real estate just after the market collapsed - some people are doing very well out of it now.

Canadian oil sands, gold exploration companies, oil pipline companies, and funds that invest in emerging markets like india and china (mostly india though).

If I were old enough I would invest in Koenigsegg, now with the CCX and the launch in America, it might pay off quite a bit

The one investment I'll regret not making to the day I die was in a Hong Kong company. Let's not mention the name and squander months of therapy.. The shares were at 0.25 HKD in 2003. Today, they are 2.00 with another 1.00 in dividends in between. The gain would have been 2,000%-plus with dividend reinvestment. Of course, there's no guarantee I would have held the entire way up and chances are that I would have sold.

Roberto, it's difficult investing in Japanese real estate directly. By that I mean, it's not always so easy for an outsider or gai-jin to step in and start buying commercial property in the heart of Tokyo. However, you could do very well buying shares in property companies. I once owned a few shares in a property company in Japan named Daikyo. It trades on the Tokyo Exchange, stock listing number is 8840. I don't own it now. Some of the Japanese banks are finally looking healthy, but their shares are relatively expensive.

Artist, do you know any non-oil companies in Russia? I think oil will stay in the low $60s and if I wanted to buy an oil company stock, there are many in Canada at good prices. By the way, I forgot to mention my favourite investment... Oops, it's uranium companies, generally smaller ones. The world is going nuclear (power) again.

Yep, Finland's building a new reactor. And some company is considering applying for permit for a uranium mine that would probably spoil a large part of a very beautiful national park (and pretty much all the lands that my family owns). Generally speaking, I support nuclear power and I know they're going to have to get the uranium somehow, but I still hope they don't build that mine. Investing in the company could be a good idea nevertheless...

Thanks, Artist. I'll surely take a look.

MikeJ, there is plenty of uranium in Canada. Why not sell a portion of your land? Is that possible? There may be residuals on your property that the mining company might be interested in? By the way, do you know the name? There really isn't that many uranium miners in the world unlike oil and gas where a new exploration company pops up weekly.

I don't have shares yet, dad has but don't know names. But when it comes to investment i think the best way to invest your money is to buy a piece of land (in the right place of course). We bought a piece three years ago and now it's value is risen by 300%
