Monster to the rescue - 06-04-2008, 05:37 AM

Ok besides the lame thread title, I did save someone today.

I was inside the train waiting for it to move off the platform, the door was closing already and people were trying to squeeze through the gap before the door fully closes.

One elderly man tried to get into the train but the door closed on him, so the doors were squeezing him from shoulder to shoulder and he was stuck. The train was about to leave the platform and half of his body is still hanging out of the train. His friends (2 elderly ladies) were pretty horrified, so I thought I can give him a hand. I held onto the pole on my left hand to get some stability and pulled the door open with my right hand. The man was free from the door and his friends said ‘thank you for saving him’. I told them these sorts of things happen and told them ‘have a safe trip home’

So I did a "Christian Wimmer" today.

Yes it is, it feels better than I expected, the Sydney trains should really address these type of issues by installing intrusion sensors on the doors to prevent these type of accidents from happening, but the again people might abuse this system by sticking their bags or their umbrellas into the path of the doors to stop them from closing, and the train will never leave the platform.

It's the same with London underground trains. When the doors close, they close. With the high flow of people in London the trains would have been delayed if the doors had sensors. Once in a while you spot someone getting stuck in the doors, or even left on the platform while their friends on inside. Still, the risk of getting dragged along side the train is minimal since the train operator always takes off after making sure nobody is in danger.

Great news Monster

I always say;
bee nice to all the people you meet,
you never know when/where you might see them agian.
Maybe you are searching for work at a company later this year
and it when you are sitting down at the interview this "old man"
is the boss for the firm..
Pretty sure you would have taken a place in the team in no time!

I wish that is true, my job application was rejected by Toyota today so my job hunting continues, perhaps I should have ask him if he owns a company of some sort.

Well done Derek ...seriously, you probably did save this elderly man's life. You have good reason to feel proud.
