Ok I agree with everything said so far...
Essentially, one can try and dig around and fix things 'manually', but usually it is just faster and less hassle to back everything up, reinstall the OS, and then reinstall your apps and data and essentially start again.
Before taking that step, do a full HD scan with the likes of Ad - aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and your virus checker. It is even worthwhile to disable your current virus checker, and download one of the free ones such as AVG, and do a full system check with that as well, as some viruses are quite effective at disabling more common virus checkers such as Norton for example. You could also download and install and run one of the registry checkers - NGB reg clean is a good one. Note, apps such as adaware, spybot, and ngb are all free off the net.
Assuming you get over this hurdle and can then access your photos.. if you don't have a backup regime, then please get one. When these hassles occur with windows, just about every-time i get called in to help someone with OS problems, they never have backups and plead and beg to not erase the drive because of all their irreplaceable data on it. And sometimes you are going to lose that data if you haven't backed it up, as it becomes uneconomical to pay someone to do anything else more time consuming than a full reinstall of the OS.
Lastly, as you are a man of excellent taste with your predilection for fine automotive machinery, plan on saving some $$$ and buy yourself the equivalent of an Mercedes in the computing world, instead of that Dell/Ford equivalent - aka a Mac.
Putting aside subjective emotional issues, such as I love/hate Macs etc, the facts are that UNIX based Mac OSX is far superior to Windows based OS when it comes to reliability and stability. If the funds are not available right now, and you fancy being a bit of a geek, download the free version of Ubuntu Linux and put that on your Dell. But you do need to be a bit of a geek to get your head around that one, and if time to play with your Benz is more important, as is just getting things done with your computer as against having to constantly fix it on the run, then buy the Mac. End of problems.
Sorry to be so direct, but it's the best advice i can give, being involved in this industry, and that which I am confident will give you the long term relief to your ongoing Dell/Windows problems.
Oh, and the Mac will LOVE your Nikon D40....
Anyway Christian, I sincerely hope it helps
Kindest Regards
John...
