Considering moving abroad - 06-15-2007, 11:49 PM

Depending upon how things go this next year, come '09 I'm thinking I might choose to move abroad. More specifically I'm looking at Europe(Spain or Germany, maybe elsewhere?) Any suggestions or knowledge shared would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Why are you considering moving abroad? Is this because you can't find the proper job you want, you are tired of the US and want some change, or sth else?

My seggestion is that you should fully know the language of the country you would move to. This would make your life a lot easier. Knowing you live in the US and you know english, moving to UK wouldn't be that difficult. Also each country has different needs when it comes to finding a job.

For example, from a recent conversation with a professor at the local univercity, he told me that in the UK there are not many doctors per people, compared to many other countries. This means if you are a doctor, you can find a job easier in UK compared for example with Greece, where each year more than 500 doctors graduate.

These are the main things you should think of before doing any move. Good luck!

Well, the main issue here is what you want to do - work, study? What field?

The United Kingdom.

Land of Hope; specially if you are from Eastern Europe *AHEM* Poland and Russia. There's always a Brit in the need of a cheap builder, painter, plumber, electrician or if you are a ridiculously rich Russian spoiled brat, you can even get the hands on a sportscar manufacturer.

And NO Glory; almost no indigenous car industry left, totally useless government, an unfounded obsession for tradition which perfectly explains why the original Mini lasted 40 years without any update and driving here is a misery.

Europe is an extremely diverse continent with some very contrasting. So telling us that you want to cross the Atlantic I can't give you advise until I know what you're after.
Do you want to see the world or do you want to work?
Are you allergic to winter time, do you want to live close to water?
What foreign languages do you know because in many of the European countries like France, Italy and Germany you simply have to partially master the local language in order to be able to live or even work there. This means that you are better of in the metropolitans where there are a good percentage of English speaking people.
This post can continue on and on which is why it is better to specify what you want to get out of your migration here in Europe.

Well I think some things are kind of obvious. For one I don't think anyone picks up their belongings and moves across the world just to "work", so of course I'd want to see the world. Mainly it's to see and experience something new and different. I speak most of the Spanish language(whats used here in the Americas, Spanish in Spain is a little different), outside of English not much else. I really don't know what else I'm suppose to list if I'm just doing a little research? I'm trying to hear what others have to say from their experience.
