Phaeton, where would we be without you for VW news????

The side profile looks remarkably good for a Pick-up. Rather sporty.

It's also great how Volkswagen improved the quality of the interior (even for cheaper models like this). Just remember the older VW…

They improve the quality of the Brazilian models and at the same time they give the Europeans average products like the Tiguan and Passat...

Just asked a friend of mine from Rio de Janeiro for more information about the Saveiro and this what he told me:

It's front wheel drive only no 4Motion option, 5-speed manual gearbox only no Tiptronic or DSG, no Bluemotion or TDI only an 1.6 8 valve flex fuel engine that runs on petrol, ethanol or a mixture of the two.

Six airbags? ABS brakes? Stability control? Traction control? Forget it. Two airbags and ABS only, but they are optional extras.

Apparently, the Saveiro is quite popular in Brazil among the so called "Vida Lokas", which is the Brazilian slang for "chavs". It's not longer the best selling small pick-up truck in Brazil, that would be the Chevrolet Montana (below).

That's right. It's a Corsa pick-up truck or "Barina Ute" as our fellow Aussie GCZ'ers would say.

Well, okay - it's not as good as I thought…

Look, you northern hemisphere folks need to realise that developing economies don't have the massive, established middle-class that developed nations have.

The Corsa pick-up is a big seller here in SA and I can tell you now that South Africans would go ape shit for this new VW "bakkie". Very nice - good for 3rd world countries...

Very cleverly styled. Go VW Brazil!

Notice that the alloy-look wheels are actually plain old pressed steel wheels. Very clever because they're more rugged and less prone to damage on bad roads. Surfer/beach-types would go for the lifestyle model in a big way.

Bring it here VWSA.

Australia would also love this especially if it were built in SA and had a TDI.

Which could happen as VWSA are developing a new model to replace the Citi (Mk1 Golf).

VW should import many of the non-euro-market-VWs in Europe as well, as cheap alternatives. The Mexico-built Fox I think sells in very good numbers in Europe, and a small and cheap pick-up could sell also very well..
