Re: Volkswagen Robust (Pickup) - News & Rumors **Update 3 April08**

I can't see why VW feels they need a pickup. Maybe 10 years ago, but that market too is shrinking now and not even Toyota has been able to really crack it. Toyota's supposed to be end-all Tundra hasn't met its sales goals either and now there is a lot of incentives on them. The large pickup segment is dominated by the big 3 and the small segment is fading away even faster. VW will surely fail with this ill-conceived product.

VW is jelous of Toyota's success on the other side of the pond. Trucks are highly popular in the US and like Marcus said the actors on the market few, making it a golden opportunity for a big brand like VW to try and chew a piece of the pie.

C'mon guys not every truck is aimed at US.

This one is aimed for Europe and Southern Hemisphere markets

PHYBENZ - never judge a book by its cover & I know a few American VW enthusiasts interested in this Ute.

I had no idea where it was aimed, but I do know it wont make it in the U.S.

From this months Autobild. Sources state this car will be produced in Argentina for the local South American market. There are plans to possibly introduce it in Germany/Europe later.

Re: Volkswagen Robust (Pickup) - News & Rumors **Update 11 May 08**

Report: Volkswagen has killed its European and U.S. pickup program

The long-awaited and much anticipated Volkswagen Robust pickup truck has been canceled for European sale, according to the latest reports. The truck will still be sold in South America, but the U.S. is also off the table. New analysis of fuel prices and market demand show there is no logical place for the vehicle in Europe.

The same conclusions would likely be reached if the analysis were performed on U.S. data, with even the classic market leading pickups failing miserably over the last few months. The report of the U.S. and EU kill-off of the Robust program comes from Automobilwoche, which also notes that the €233 million investment in the company’s Pacheco, Buenos Aires plant in Argentina and continuing demand mean the truck will still be built there, starting in 2009.
Canceling the Robust program means there are 700 jobs in limbo at the 13,000-worker Hanover plant in Germany. VW is looking for other projects to take up the slack left by the Robust, but so far nothing has been announced.

Re: Volkswagen Robust (Pickup) - News & Rumors **Update 11 May 08**

Wrong wrong wrong

Automobilwoche have corrected themselves by saying the Robust will make it to Europe but only through small import volumes.

As to what will replace Robust in the Hanover plant is anyones guess ?

Caddy 4X4
Microbus
Small Pickup

Who knows ?

Re: Volkswagen Robust (Pickup) - News & Rumors **Update 11 May 08**

I believe that such a car could sell. At least here in Greece, cars like that, such as Nissan Navara, Mitshubishi L200 and Toyota whatever-the-name-is are pretty much a common sight!
