Rumor: BMW's Sustainable Sports Car Concept coming to Frankfurt '09

Quote:
Busy, busy. BMW starts the day by leaving F1. And it looks like for lunch they're bringing a green sports car to the Frankfurt Auto Show. Maybe. According to Autotelegraf.nl, the new sustainable sports car concept will be inspired by the BMW M1 Hommage concept and will feature all the latest and greatest BMW EfficientDynamics (auto stop/start, regenerative brakes, electric powersteering, etc). But the hits don't stop there -- look for the concept to be built from sustainable materials, too. Big question: will this car be just a concept, or will a sustainable sports car actually make its way to dealers? Dunno. But the Dutch word is that BMW is studying the viability of said project and is planning on a limited release two-door showcasing their best environmental kung fu by 2012. Again, we just don't know, and we're not quite willing to hold our breath yet.

It's not the M1 Hommage.
The car shown will give the clues to what will be coming designwise in our Sports car programme either as compact or full size.

We call it Vision Z. Because it is our Vision for the Z series. Not every Z model is going be the same model for each segment. With Z and now with X and GT we want to keep a bloodline going but they are not the same model in different proportions. With Sports cars you have to have an identity that seperates it from other models of the same family. Each model has to offer something fresh and exciting and not be just an enlarged Z4 etc.

It was mentioned in the BMW F1 thread.

I'm looking forward to this Vision Z, seeing as it will show the design language of the Z2.

We've been about Z Vision / Z10 Concept @ IAA 2009 for about a year now. In different threads.

A car showcasing Z2 & potential Z supercar.

But now it become official yesterday: at press conference (on BMW quiting F1) Dr. Draeger (chief R&D BMW AG) said the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car (showcasing green sports car) would be premiered @ IAA 2009.

So, CM have been talking about this concept for months!

conan_55 is an unknown quantity at this point
Nah, the concept will be nowhere near a production ready model. Maybe only preview of headlights shape etc etc.

Supercar? Definitely no. I'm not even holding my breath we would ever see the Z8/9. The "creative marketing" has been hyping it for years now but guess what? Nothing even on the horizon as of today.

First you have to answer the question: How will the supercar of (sustainable) future look like?

As said: don't expect some huge mid-engine exotic cars ...

And: Z10 vs. Z9. Although 10>9 it doesn't mean Z10>Z9 (in size).

I'm hearing Audi is bringing R8 Spyder E to the show, while MB will bring a SLS ElectroVision concept.

And BMW will of course be there with the EfficientDynamics Vision concept.

Btw, I'm hearing MINI will soon show a roadster concept (also as E version?) ... @ IAA already?

Sure the BMW Group stands @ IAA will be worthy of visit this year.

auto-motor-sport.de is still sticking to the M1 Hommage.

Are they so ignorant and uninformed that they have the guts to bring it as cover story while everybody else in the know is talking about a Z-Concept?
