It would be too fragile for the hard city-life... However modern materials can be amazing, so a material soft enough to move like that but solid enough to resist minor schocks without damage could exist/be created. Maybe not for the hood (or not to replace the opening) or doors, but certainly for the kidneys and air intakes (evident aerodynamic advantages), bootlid, and some parts involved in aerodynamics. The Japs already used movable wings and front spoilers (Mitsu 3000GT for instance), this is the next level. And it's way more impressive. But some problems, like the impossibility to repair the car given the cost of replacement (panels, electric motors and movable structure , structure of the car, motor...)... But as in the next future, the cars will avoid accidents themselves (they already park alone and brake in case of emergency) this won't be a problem any more. I like this idea, this craziness. I think, if Bangle is responsible for this, that he should be in the R&D of BMW (not in the design, he obviously doesn't master it ).Incredible Concept Car, really.

It will be the "talk of the town" ... Just like the most controversy BMW Concept car was: the x-coupe. These are the actions that put BMW AG on a pedestal of design leaders. Of course a great amount of self-promotion is needed to achieve that. And with Bangle as a design chief ... quite an easy task. ![]() Btw, MB could have done much more with that bionic car if it hadn't been shaped like a beluga whale. A marketing failure? Imagine a super luxury bionic sedan ... That would be THE thing. Quote:
The paradigm "here you have a structure, now design the cloth" was terminated. Instead of that designers got the opportunity to come out with crazy ideas, and challenge the engineers to find the solutions. That moved the whole company on different level. Designers became a part of company's think-tank. And concepts like x-coupe or GINA are products of such philosophy: designers come out with an idea, engineers materializes it (in cooperation with designers). The revived design department has a task to push design (not just styling!) boundaries further, and than approach to the R&D to work with them materializing the craziest ideas. Eg. the E92 low & straight shoulder line : designers persisted on such solution although engineers had second thoughts, wanting higher rear (with higher shoulder line) to easier implement the folding metal roof. But designers "won" - and engineers were challenged to find proper solution to fit into that design. It's all about possibilities, arguments, compromises, challenges ... Sometimes designers prevail, sometimes engineers do, and often sometimes marketing & financial guys (R&D budget!) do. But they are equal today ... all arguments are heard, and the Board decides in the end if compromise can't be reached. Much more dynamic, innovative & challenging environment.
