Gina is an 'old' concept, it was just not shown in public until now (according to German 'Auto Motor und Sport' also German Focus Magazine).
Even in the Q&A article posted above it says ...Gina influenced the design of the Z4 Coupe bonnet....so its probably around 5 years old....
Still ...the front headlights shape and characterline (the one going from the side to the grille ) is probably silmilar to the upcoming Z4

GINA is a doctrine! An old one - introduced many years ago.

Eni...looks like we posted at the same time...
I am sure you have the correct info....however, I became suspicious, when I saw this photo....looks like Chris is a few years younger....especially compared with the video from the Gina presentation

Re: Official: BMW GINA Light Vision

It has good details, like the car adapting itself to the driver, but somo other thigns, like the lights desing are out of place, cool for a prototipe, but ugly for a real car.

Also it is good to see that BMW is changing their view of "all in one" that started with the Z9 and its revolutionary iDrive. You only have to look at the CS concept to see where the right way is. No big displays anymore, Head UP Display is all we need, GPS, car information... All can be displayed by the proyector.

I remember first time i see E65 interior, i thought "Where are all the buttons?". And even today, i still thinking that E38/E39 interiors, or the more actuals 1er and 3er ones (without iDrive) are better than the original BMW idea of no buttons.

Re: Official: BMW GINA Light Vision

The Concept is from a few years ago built over the Z8 alloy spaceframe which eventually transformed into the Rolls-Royce Phantom.
But the actual design is very much this season.

You question what does this have to do with " Efficient Dynamics" ?

Well aerodynamics are either a hinder or helpful to proving efficiency , especially around the shape of the car , By literally changing the form and flow of the body you can receive greater improvements in fuel consumption therefore improving efficiency.

Look now to why I said M Division will be the "Pinnacle" of " Efficient Dynamics" we know what we want to do . Now imagine further down the road a BMW Supercar - 0 emissions and GINA like format body panels , That alter the shape of the car - innovative , Ground breaking - A TALKING POINT.

Remember we have also showed off on the Vision X5 - Special aerodynamic wheels (That will be available in production cars- Efficient Dynamics Phase II)
this is what we want to do with the segment and yes the technology is being adapted further. Movable aerodynamics under cars to improve airflow? All being developed for production cars.

As for the look , There are elements of what the Z-series will inherit , The rear offers a more exaggerated but similar approach to the next Z4 Roadster as does the front end with it's snake -eye slits offering animalistic feeling to the front of the car and as you can see the beginning of the 3-D design for the twin BMW grille. I think you will find that it does work rather well in the integration of the front design. I still remember the nasty comments when I suggested it many moons ago.

Great.

BTW: What's the connection between GINA and the M1 Hommage? I saw the M1 on the pin board behind Chris Bangle in the video.

Best regards, south

Indeed.

Chris is younger, and Anders (Warming) is still a "boy" & still had plenty of hair in those pics.
Also Herr Thomas Plath (head of Advanced Design Studio) is still grey-hair-free.

Btw, just like E85 Z4 & Mille Miglia 2006 Concept also GINA Light was penned by Anders Warming (now influential head of exterior design BMW Automobile, before that: design team leader in BMW Advanced Design Studio).

So, looking at those pics I can say they were made before 2003 (when Warming left for VW/Audi - coming back to BMW in 2005). Eg. Anders was in Munich in years 1999 & 2000. Before & after he was in Newbury Park studios.

What impact did GINA have initially on the company ?

It was like a lightening rod triggering discussions on where this could lead in terms of production and manufacturing. We questioned if mass assembly is the only way. It lead to rapid manufacturing, a way of digitally creating car parts for a fraction of the cost, that were stiffer and it made them available to more customers which we never thought we could do.
The bonnet of the Z4 M was our first digitally produced piece of hardware for a production car. This technology is called GBK, GINA im Blechkleid, or GINA in metal cloths.

Rapid manufacturing is a big topic right now. Customized parts can be made directly from the desk top to the final product in only a few hours.

This technique (below) is known as Stereolithography. it is essentially a vat of liquid resin that reacts and solidifies when the UV-laser hits it. It builds up a 3D product one layer at a time.

Has GINA influenced BMW design ?

Absolutely. When you enter GINA, the car wakes up around you and you can choose what functions to display. The BMW iDrive system is about the spirit of the GINA philosophy.
Also, the team worked with an origami master to explore ways of giving metal the origami treatment. In the Mille Miglia concept interior, for example, we have created a 3D structure from 2D sheets using special laser cutting and folding processes.
This is what I PMed you about Tine -- the structural aspects of Bangle's design ideas.

I have a great interest in structural engineering ...especally when art and engineering are working in perfect harmony.

Re: Official: BMW GINA Light Vision

Few years ago Dr. Goeschel (ex-chief of development) said BMW decided to enter high-end sailing team, and acquired an F1 team also to get the expertise in rapid prototyping & manufacturing among other things.

PS: this GINA concept is so radical & futuristic - even today, in 2008. Now imagine the reaction if this concept had been shown in 2002. Scary!
