BMW Trademark Filings: M10, 555, Progressive Activity Sedan

BMW has filed for three interesting trademarks that give clues to its future product plans. They are: BMW M10, Progressive Activity Sedan, and BMW 555. The first appears to refer to a new high-performance model, while last clearly relates a new 5-Series variant. As for the new "PAS" — we're not too sure.

BMW M10

Insiders have long believed BMW to be working on a successor to the M1 mid-engine sports car, which was built between 1978 to 1981. A number of names have been rumored for the supercar, with "M10" recently appearing in the German press.

It turns out that might be the badge of choice, because BMW filed for a trademark on the name "M10" on July 18th, 2007.

BMW 555

BMW's trademark on the name "555" was 'published for opposition' on August 7th, 2007. That step usually indicates a company is actively pursuing the trademark with intentions of using it.

At first glance, 555 might seem to refer to a 5-Series sedan with a 5.5 liter engine, but it could also mean something different. BMW's 335, for example, has a 3.0 liter engine with the extra "5" representing its turbocharger, rather than another half liter of displacement.

Progressive Activity Sedan

Another new acronym from BMW? The automaker's new X6 is referred to as a "Sports Activity Coupe," which creates a less-than-ideal acronym — SAC.

Could BMW be considering a new marketing term for its four-door X6? Or perhaps the "Progressive Activity Sedan" is yet another new niche vehicle coming from BMW. Only time will tell.

That's definately not going to happen since the X6 is going to be marketed as a Coupe, and not a Sedan.

As for the M10.. well well well.. let's just hope this will materialise into a mid-engine BMW sportscar. Just curious though, the CS Concept is going to end up being the new series, is there an M-variant planned for this car? .. if so, then maybe the car will not be labelled the 8series, but rather a 10series -- I can see the slogan already "4 doors, 2 numbers.. yet 1 car - the new 10 series".

Same thing crossed my mind when I read the article. I just find it pointless to use the M-brand for one single car and model. Z is a much better choice for a unique super car.

Re: BMW Trademark Filings: BMW M10

Progressive Activity Sedan my interpretation: could be the RFK(F3/5) , I doubt if it will be the X6.
M10 pretty much speaks for itself.
555 could be 4.4/4.6/4.8 litre TT V8 in the 5 series.

Re: BMW Trademark Filings: BMW M10

I'm probably wrong but I think PAS will probably be a CLS competitor.

Re: BMW Trademark Filings: BMW M10

555 sounds very Subaru Impreza-ish:

If they are really going to use that name, it will most likely be the biturbo V8 (why is everybody saying it's a 4.8 biturbo all the time???)

M10 is a given: BMW supercar. That'll shut a lot of people here up. BMW can and will do all cars it seems.

Progressive Activity Sedan could be the Concept CS.
And it could be the V5/F5/whatever5.
NOT the X6. That's a 'coupe'

Now that you mentioned that, the 555 or the PAS could very well be the CLS competitor.

Re: BMW Trademark Filings: BMW M10

555 ... BMW also registered eg 560, 435, 222, 623, 114, M2, M4, M7, M8, 845, 850, 860 etc names a while ago. Can mean nothing. Just a preventive registration ... just in case.

M10: an upcoming large 2-seater performance coupe - M coupe version of Z8 roadster. Developed by M GmbH as a stand alone model - with no "civil" variants. The model was previously labeled as Z9 / Z10 in my or Scott's posts.

No 9-series, or 10-series registered by BMW. Also no Z9 or Z10 trademarks owned by BMW..

A range of F series (from F2 to F9) also registered by BMW (the RFK cars - aka PAS - progressive activity sedans).

Progressive Activity Sedan: the F-series cars (aka RFK) - registered range from F2 to F9.

Yet the name "Sports Activity Coupe" is not registered by BMW at all.

BMW Active Hybrid is registered though.
