I'm not too sure any BMW enthusiast will find it a sad-day.. more likely the absolute opposite. BMW enthusiasts have always stood strong on the point that BMW has the ability to build a supercar, but they just don't want to at the moment. Now I guess BMW feel there is enough of a market for such a car (not to mention they've probably learned a hell of a lot from their F1 involvement).

It's more of a day to celerate than be sad if your a BMW fan.. and I think the positive reactions of those in this thread alone highlight that.

I'm damn sure happy BMW's making an M10... and just the simple thought that it will be completely in-house at M-division means NO COMPROMISE.

According to the info I'm getting M10 will actually be a "M coupe version of Z8".

Yet Z8 roadster will come with metal folding roof - just like MB SL. So, it will be a "CC". Therefore BMW are considering to offer a coupe variant (with fixed roof) as an M variant only - with no other engine variants. While the Z8 roadster / CC will come with several engine variants - incl. M.

Yet since M10 is considered to be a standalone model it is expected to be more hardcore than Z8 / Z8 M - much less compromised & much more exclusive & extensive use of lightweight materials.

A supercar? Not at all. Definitely not a mid-engine one.

......

Best comparison: M10 vs SL AMG BlackSeries.

BMW M10, 555 and "Progressive Activity Sedan" on the way

I guess the BMW M10 supercar is a reality...

"
BMW Files For Three New Trademarks

German car maker BMW have filed for three new trademarks, hinting at potential future production model or design study designations, reports car enthusiast website leftlanenews. Trademarks of 'BMW M10', 'BMW 555' and 'Progressive Activity Sedan' have all been registered. Upon first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking that BMW have a high-performance "M" version of an oversized luxury sedan, a 5.5-litre 5-series and an until-now unsurfaced mould-breaking crossover vehicle in the pipeline - but all may not be as it seems.
BMW M10
Rumours of a spiritual successor to the BMW M1 of the late 70s flourished last year following the "leak" of information by an Italian tuning firm on a forthcoming V10-powered supercar from the German maker. And it would seem that substance has now been given to the tuner's claims. It had been maintained that they were to produce a 214 mph supercar based on BMW's forthcoming M10, seeing showroom floors by the end of 2009.
BMW 555
According to leftlanenews, the '555' trademark was 'published for opposition' back in August, which tends to indicate a strong indication as to the use of a trademark. In regard to its use, there are two likely options. The newly-registered trademark may very well refer to a forthcoming 5-series featuring a 5.5-litre output, although it may also signal a turbocharged version of the 5-series' existing 5.0-litre engine. The designation would therefore follow suit with BMW's 335, which is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre unit.
Progressive Activity Sedan
The more ambiguous registration is this, the 'Progressive Activity Sedan'. BMW presently refer to their upcoming X6 SUV as a 'Sports Activity Coupe', so unless the name got the boot after its Frankfurt premiere, that designation is likely to stay - if only for marketing purposes. It could however signal the naming strategy for the forthcoming 5-series based V-Series, captured by our spies only last week. Or, dare we say it, BMW have yet another new mould-breaker up their sleeves?"

An impression of the M10.
Using the V10 M-engine with a poweroutput speculated around 520-530 HP.

Re: BMW Trademark Filings

Some latest trademarks registered by BMW in US (beside 555, M10, Progressive Activity Sedan):

M9

PAS (this time as abbreviation)

Btw, I also found out BMW still own Isetta trademark.

Now I'm 200% sure Isetta (smart rival) brand will be revived. Especially with BMW plans offering "new urban mobility solutions" under a new brand, and (confirmed by D. Zetche in his latest interview) BMW interest in all electric & hybrid Smart platform.

Why do people keep referring to and posting this ? When anybody who knows that it is a manipulated Ferrari ??

BMW are not offering a mid or rear engined supercar because there is no need and we have no need for such a model.

The only car that will be a carbon copy of the looks of the BMW CS Concept will be the production model of the BMW CS Concept.
BMW as a design led company have now distanced their selves from the one look for all models and we have no intentions to return to that era just to please journalists and traditionalists.

M2 & M4 trademarks are also registered.
Such range registration (eg. X, F, M) are usually just a precaution measures. Same case with every possible engine designation: eg. x16, x18, x20, x22, x23, x25, x28, x30, x32, x33, x35, x36, x40, x42, x45, x48, x50, x55, x60, x66, x70 etc.

So what will the M9 be, Eni? Or is it just one of those "precaution measures"?
