Eurovision Song Contest 2008 - the countdown - 05-16-2008, 05:43 AM

So, here we go again ... The biggest European travesty of the year (beside EU itself) is here again ... The Eurovision Song Contest ... the biggest music trash-show in the world. Something that puts us Europeans in very strange light.

This year in Belgrade, Serbia.

....

To demonstrate you what a freak show it is ... just two of my "favorites" - the weirdest ones of course:

Ireland:

Bosnia & Hercegovina:

I love the Irish sense of humor - in the past they won many ESC awards but recently when its all about freak-show Irish contestants with excellent voices, singing ballades are completely out of league.
So, this year they came with ironic parody / travesty ... The Ultimate Freak Performance - they sent a puppet to perform a trash song!

****

Not to mention the voting charade where mostly neighboring countries give each other max. points (eg. Greece to Cyprus etc), or even better: the immigrants voting for their native country - giving it max. points (eg. Germany giving Turkey 12pts etc).
So in the end the whole freak-show gets the political context.

God I hate this stupid event. In the past (mainly '70s and early '80s) the songs they sang were actually quite lovely had and more cultural references in them.

These days countries send a bunch of untalented and domestically unwanted singers to this event. I never watch this trash anyway.

PS: That singer for Bosnia & Hercegovina has AIDS. Guaranteed.

By the way Eni, I think the Fritzl song should be renamed BASEMENT CHILD and some of the lyrics should be ripped of Rick Astly's 1980s hit "Whenever I Need Somebody".

Whenever I need somebody, I bring my love to you!

You know guys, I have the feeling the competition isn't quite the freak show it used to be. We've been watching the previews (it actually beats most things on TV these days), and while there are hardly any masterpieces it's not quite the drivel it used to be. There are some jokes though...
Estonia:

Latvia:

Spain:

... and some which are simply awful...
Lithuania:

... but it's nice to see that e.g. the UK is once again sending a 'serious' entry:

Of course, I'm not quite sure how to categorize this...
Finland's entry:

Or using Presley's In The Getto - modified:

In The Basement

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Amstetten mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the basement

And his mama cries
cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another incest child to feed
In the basement

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see,
Do we simply turn our heads
And look the other way

Well the world turns
And an incest boy with a runny nose
Plays in the room with a plastic hose
In the basement

And he wants to learn
So he starts to wonder who his papa is
And he learns the truth
And he learns how f**ked he is
In the basement

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He goes to the police
Tells them what the situation is

And his mama cries

As a police breaks in the Fritzl house
He is caught bare naked molesting a mouse
In the basement

And he just smiles,

On a cold and gray Amstetten mornin'
Another little incest child is born
In the basement
