Lamborghini Murcielago SV (Spy pics & info)

As Lamborghini’s Murcielago supercar nears the end of its lifecycle, designers intend to release a lightened version with even more power than the 641hp Reventon. Expected to pick up the fabled ‘SV’ title, used previously for the Diablo, the new model will weigh up to 100kg less than the stock version when it arrives in late 2008.

The information comes from an inside source at Sant’Agata who spoke recently with AutoWeek. The source also revealed the new car would likely be RWD, dropping the front differential and driveshafts to save weight, and feature plenty of carbon-fiber.

Like the Superleggera, engineers will focus on three main areas: interior, exterior and mechanicals. The interior will be stripped out and replaced with carbon, including the door innards, seats and center console.

The automatic spoilers will be replaced with a fixed carbon GT wing, and the stock wheels will be swapped with lightweight forged units.

E-gear will be standard, although it will be upgraded for faster shift times, and many of the stock aluminum components will be replaced with lighter magnesium pieces. Shift times are expected to drop from the current 0.4 seconds to around 0.2 seconds.

Spy Shots: Lamborghini Murcielago SV snapped

We alerted you last week to the existence of the Lamborghini Murcielago SV, a rear-wheel-drive version of the normally all-wheel-drive LP640. Seen here undergoing some on-track testing, the SV will reportedly serve up some 680 horsepower from its Lambo V12 behind the seats. It will also be lighter than a normal Murcielago by 220 pounds. Clearly visible on the car is a new fixed rear wing that's either meant to assist in take offs or stabilize the car at high-speeds. Expect carbon fiber to be a common build material, as well. Those are all some potent variables for a formula that guarantees a fun time.

The Murcielago SV will be the latest in a string of new models from Lamborghini lately including the LP640, Reventon, Gallardo LP560-4, Gallardo Superleggera, among others. We're expecting the SV to debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, but judging from the spy shots in our gallery below, it looks ready now.

Re: Lamborghini Murcielago SV (Spy pics & info)

Talk of a new, lightweight and high-power variant of the aging Lamborghini Murcielago dubbed the 'superveloce', or SV, has been circulating the web for months now. A new report from an enthusiast forum has revealed what appear to be credible details of the car's specifications and design.

The SV model would be used to breathe life into the
soon-to-be-replaced Murcielago. To do so, Lamborghini is expected to reduce weight and boost power for a truly hardcore driving experience. The new report, sourced from Ferrari Chat forums via Jalopnik, reveals that the car will bear the model number 'LP670-4 SV', and using Lamborghini naming convention, that would imply a 670hp (500kW), four-wheel drive powertrain configuration.

Going AWD would be in direct opposition to earlier reports that the SV would be a RWD-only variant to save the weight attendant to an AWD powertrain.

Other details revealed include a description of the body work as reminiscent of the
Gallardo Superleggera and a choice of rear wings - the larger of which knocks top speed down from 212mph (342km/h) to 209mph (337km/h). Finally, the SV is expected to feature extensive use of Alcantara on the interior and a redesigned steering wheel.

According to the report, the price of the car is expected to bear a 25% premium over the Murcielago LP640, putting it around $390,000 in the U.S. It is expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
