| URGENT - need help from audiophiles on a home theatre system! -
04-19-2008, 08:54 AM
Right now, as some of you guys might know, my family's building a new house.
We're currently deciding on a new home theatre system for a room that's about 7m wide and 6m long. There are so many systems around for sale, we simply do not know which one to choose because we're new to this.
Are anyone of you using any theatre systems now, and if so, do you have any comments about it? Or, if you're an enthusiast on such things, do you have any recommendations to make?
Thanks. | | | | | Expert

There are various home cinema systems I can recommend but it all depends on what your budget, upgrading needs, number of speakers and features sought after like DVD, Bluray and such. What will be the primary use music or video? | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to Centurion For This Useful Post: | | | Fanatic

For the music, you have as far as I know 3 excellent satellite systems:
the Kef is the better all-rounder, music and cinema.
The Triangle (a French system that you won't find where you are, and it's too bad for you) is excellent on music but a bit lacking in bass so too weak fot the big explosions.
And an Infiniti, excellent all-rounder too but better looking than the Kef.
That's for the satellites of course. If you want big speakers you have a lot more choice. It's all depending on your budget and preferences.
Concerning the electronics, a lot of brands are very good. It's going from a cheap little Yamaha or Denon to a McIntosh that will cost as much as a good car.
You have to decide if it's more music or more cineme, the needs are different. For the cinema, a lot of systems are good enough. For the music it's different, home-cinema systems are not really musical and a stereo will do a better job at that.
Avoid Bose, it's crappy and expensive.
7x6, a satellite system could be a bit limited.
5.1 is recommended, more is not necessary in your room. If it's more music than cinema, take a stereo, it will be almost as good as a 5.1 but will sound way better on music.

Upgrading needs - none, we plan to keep it simple and as it is
Number of speakers - 5.1
Features - Bluray, Wifi connectivity, iPod integration
Primary use - movies
We intend to get a separate system for stereo. Or, to use only the two front speakers for it.
We've got a decent quote for a system that uses Jeff Rowland amps and Aerial speakers, are those any good? | | | | | Fanatic

Areyou looking for a projector or an LCD/Plasma display. I just upgraded my LCD display and could not be happier with the quality when watching Bluray disks or for that matter normal television (digital)... I think I also need to update my sound system etc. Mines getting quite old now. Maybe next month I'll Be happy to hear about your purchase.... | | | | | Expert

That's the best thing to do if you're not going to buy an average off-the-shelf home cinema system. HiFi stores are great since they tend to have viewing rooms in where they can set up systems for you, so that you can try the stuff out before buying at. And all of this after closing time so that you will have the store's undivided attention. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to Centurion For This Useful Post: | | | Moderator

I have some speakers from Infinity and I'm absolutely happy with them. Test some sound systems, go to a dealer!! | | | | | Connoisseur

Decided on something from Bowers & Wilkins. It's being installed right now. When my new house is ready in 2 months (it was almost a 2 year wait), I'll post pictures to let you guys see what we've done. | | | | | Trendsetter
