Tali-Ihantala 1944 - 06-03-2007, 07:15 AM

This looks like a very interesting upcoming movie for those of you who are into World War II aircraft.

Tali-Ihantala 1944 is a film directed by Åke Lindman, based on the Battle of Tali-Ihantala. The filming began during the summer of 2006 and is scheduled for screening in the fall of 2007. Åke Lindman himself hopes the film can be as real as possible, and only include facts. He also wants Finns to remember the sacrifices the soldiers made in those battles.

The film got €350 000 production support from the Finnish Film Foundation. The organization created to raise money for the movie is led by Admiral Jan Klenberg and is protected by the former Finnish President Mauno Koivisto.

The movie uses a wide array of genuine wartime vehicles, and when not possible, replicas are used. One interesting feature is the use of a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 replica, made by the German company Flug Werk.[1] During the shooting of the movie, the aircraft was marked similarly as Oberst Erich Rudorffer's aircraft in 1944.

And here's more info on Erich Rudorffer.

Nope. But I expect a full review from you about this movie once it's in the theater's!

Can you recommend some good Finnish WW2 movies?

BTW, your airforce was still using Messerschmitt BF-109's until 1956 I believe!

A classic among Finnish war flicks is Tuntematon sotilas (The Unknown Soldier) from 1955. Another popular (but very long) choice is Talvisota (Winter War) from 1989. These are definitely not your typical Hollywood stuff, and you might need some knowledge of the historical events to understand them... For something a bit more recent, there's Rukajärven tie (literally The Road to Rukajärvi, but known in English as Ambush).

Åke Lindman has previously directed one war film, Etulinjan edessä - framom främsta linjen (Beyond the Front Line) in 2004, but I haven't seen it yet. He also acted in Tuntematon sotilas.

Post-WW2, Finland didn't have too much money to throw around, and apparently no one was too eager to sell fighter jets to a neutral country (with a very long border with the Soviet Union) either. Luckily things have changed since.

Sounds good. Might need to check them out. Do they deal with the Russian-Finnish winter wars of the 1930s and 1940s? I'll check them out on IMBD later, hope they're on there!

I think the BF-109G-6's you guys had after WW2 would have done quite well against Mig-15 jets!

There was only one Winter War (1939-1940). One of the movies deals with it, guess which one. The other two deal with what is known as the Continuation War (1941-1944). There was also the Lapland War (1944-1945), but that wasn't with the Soviets...

Thatswhy I said 1930s and 1940s (1939-1940).

The last Scandinavian movie I saw was some terrible Swedish teen vampire flick. I think it was called Frostbite or Frostbitten. Terrible movie.
