BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infiniti are all aped here. ![]() ![]() The worst part is the badgeless grille. I've never seen a grille like this with NO badge whatsoever either inside or ontop of it. ![]() ![]() A gated shifter from a 80's Mercedes-Benz and of course the BMW idrive style controller are a must from a copier luxury car intender. ![]() Clean for sure, but the most non-discript luxury car on the market. I mean this one will have them wondering it is until you actually read the name. M

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Hyundai unveils Genesis sedan I'm surprised by how underwhelming my gut reaction is to this car. I really expected, with great design leadership now in place at Hyundai, to be wowed by the Genesis. I'm not. The design is elegent and well-resolved, but it says nothing - absolutely nothing. Rather, this looks like a an "anycar," and functions as a state of the union address for transportation design in 2008. This car manages to conjure up visions of the New Accord, Lexus LS, Mercedes S-Class and Toyota Camry all at once. What it doesn't do is make a mark for itself - There's nothing, aboslutely nothing this car can hang its hat on. The interior is another exercise in design mediocrity. It's modern and inviting in a nondescript manner. It it entirely devoid of fashion - it's just a reflection of what's been done with success elsewhere. I'm also surprised by the generally positive reaction this car is receiving here on these forums. Like... really surprised. Everything I felt that Hyundai was doing right with their new Tiburon concept is absent in this car. Will it be a commercial success? I'm very skeptical of its short-term prospects, but I think it's a great product for elevating the public's general regard of the Hyundai brand. In summary - This is a good stepping-stone for Hyundai. But for something that was being touted in the press as a breakthrough product, I'm just not buying it.

But hey, for the price they are putting this thing out there, it's gonna sell... it has most of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a luxury car minus the badge.

![]() | Re: Hyundai unveils Genesis sedan I really have nothing to add to this conversation that has not already be said (great analysis of the design from Marcus and Josh BTW) .....I must say though that my general impression is this is a high-quality product -- the details all look very well finished -- that, at least, deserves respect.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Hyundai unveils Genesis sedan Hyundai has some decisions to make. It seems the company's decision makers can't decide which grille design they're going to go with on its new luxury sedan, the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. Right now they have two to choose from, and they're both being displayed on the Detroit auto show floor. Wheels, too. Notice the wheels on the red car are different from the wheels on the black car in the photo Hyundai sent us just last week. According to Wayne Killen, Hyundai's director of product planning, he and his team are gathering opinions over the next few days, but Hyundai could end up using either, both or neither design. Personally, I like the funky grille without the Hyundai badge and sportier-looking wheels on the black car. Tell me, which do you like better? -- Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief Straightline - 2008 Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Hyundai Genesis Has Two Grilles and Two Wheels This is the kind of nonsense you get when you don't have anything to draw on but your competitor's styling. Could you imagine a German, Japanese, British or American luxury car company not knowing which grille to use and showing both of them at an autoshow? IMO, the first grille looks the best, but it needs the H symbol from the second grille intergrated into it somehow. Either way the car is handsome if the most contrived thing since the first generation LS400. M
