Re: ***NEW Mercedes-Benz Museum: I went!!!***

Very nice write up!

I have a coulple of questions:

1. Are these cars owned by MB and kept there for display or do some people that own them rotate them in for display?
2. Do you have, and I don't know because I haven't checked your album, any pictures of the interiors of the concepts that mb had?

Man I must say that it is very interesting to see designs change through time. I was looking at one of the first pictures of one of the cars which I think was the SSK sports car, is so interesting. I like to imagine what it was like for people to see these cars for the first time. I imagine it was the same feeling as seeing the new s class, you know that it is brand new and is soooo futuristic.

Nice thread Wimmer!

What other MB attractions does Germany have to offer? I'd love to visit someday.

Thanks ever so much for all the pictures, a very interesting read!

Where is this museum, because nest time I'm in Germany, I may go to it, it seems very interesting!
No problem at all, and yes I had fun. It was truly a remarkable experience and I am looking forward to my next trip!

The museum itself is in a district of Stuttgart called "Untertürkheim". If you're driving, there are various roadsigns that tell you where this place is and once you near the museum, you'll see the Mercedes star on the roadsigns, follow those. I used the E320's APS-50 nav system to find the place though.

cawimmer430 - No R129 SL pic and narrative????

I think this is why I like Mercedes so much, their connection to the very birth of the automobile and their dedication to preserving their rich heritage.

M

Anytime.

There was no R129 SL on display, but I am sure they'll have one in a couple of years. The reason they had the W140 S-Class was because it's already being considered a "future classic", while the R129 SL hasn't really caught on to that - yet.

Thanks Artist.

Since you live in Sweden, you might want to take a trip to this place sometime. A must for any Mercedes-fan. Think of it as the 'holy pilgrimage to Stuttgart".

Say, was there a light blue 6-door W124 somewhere close to this one? A former taxi from my town was supposed to go on display there, even though it had 'only' 1.65 million km on the clock.
Thanks Mike.

Didn't see the light blue W124 you are talking about, but they might put it into the museum soon. I was also wondering why the W114 / W115 240D with 4.2 million km didn't make it into the museum. My hunch tells me that these will be added soon. They might rotate some of the cars, like Porsche does in their museum.

My dad drove a 190D Fintail in the '60s when he was doing an internship with a beer company. The car belonged to his boss and one of the things my dad had to do was drive him around. What fun that must have been.

Incidentally, brewers in those days were quite wealthy. Why this guy opted for a 190D instead of a 220S or a 300SE is interesting. Perhaps because he had diesel fuel on site for the trucks - a very common thing in 1960s Germany.
