There is a BIG diference between BMW and Mercedes in termns of engines nowadays.
Yep. I believe the ML and E-Class are first off heavier than their BMW counterparts and they're equipped with "older" engines. Do you know if that X5 3.0d and 530i came with Start-Stop technology?

Interesting point.

My experiences with BMWs are limited to my sisters BMW 118i. I love the car. It drives nicely and is always a joy to drive but the fuel consumption is simply terrible. Official BMW claims are about 6.4 L / 100 km, yet out 118i with A/T needs an average of 8.0 L / 100 km, even when driven in cruising mode. With a small 50 liter fuel tank you don't get far and the fuel clock is a pain to watch as the needle goes down very quickly.

AMS has mentioned that it will produce close to 200-horsepower. I suspect that there will be "several versions" of this engine ('180 Turbo, '200 Turbo etc.) with the '200 perhaps producing close to 200-horsepower. However, since it is totally not the MB way of making engines with close to 100-hp/liter this honor might even go to a theoretical "230 Turbo" etc.

Sorry, but have you ever driven 530i for a long time? I had 19-21l/100 km. In a much havier E350 4Matik I had 18-19l/100 km (same driving style - full acceleration everywhere when possible). S600 Biturbo is more efficient than 760LI with it's 23-24 litres per 100 km (not sport mode) and you know how fast it is.

I know nothing about AUDI but I don't think it's better than BMW or MB.

Recently I had an oportunity to drive BMW 123d. That is the future! I am looking forward for MB new 250CDI, and I badly want to drive a car with this engine.

My car with 170 hp drinks less fuel than yours with 143hp. My car also drink less fuel than my Mum's 118i with 129hp.
Efficient dynamics really helps and thanks to that BMW fuel consumption has improved. I think if you follow the break in-periode correct the fuel comsumption will be better.
Lets not forget that cars with automatic gearbox drinks more fuel than a manual gearbox.

Ps I read more than 100 cartests every year and in general, BMW drink less fuel than Mercedes.

Ok i admit that some engines might drink slightly less..
But its still the same old tech.. same old fuels with some tweaks..
Nothing revolutionary from either Audi or BMW..
So i dont think the competition is running somewhare far from MB..
Audi and BMW have a huge lead in introduction of direct injection. MB currently only has a couple of models with DI while BMW and Audi have it basically cross the whole model line.

Re: What´s the story with MB enfines for the future?

Those factory figures should really be taken with a grain of salt. My 2006 318d with 2.0 diesel engine and 122 hp consumes 8.1 l/km on average (though it is mostly city driving and I don't try to drive with a gentle foot). If I remember correctly, the brochure had it at less than 7 l /km for city driving.
Granted, this was before the Efficient Dynamics was introduced.

Re: What´s the story with MB engines for the future?

This is figures from swedish carmag AMS and tested fuel consumption:

Meassure fuel consumption, Liters/100km

320d (177hp) - 6.1
A4 2.0TDi, 143hp - 7.0
C220 Cdi ,170hp - 7.8

330iA 258hp - 10.7
C280, 231hp - 11.0

A6 2.4, 177hp - 1.02
bmw 523i , 177hp - 9.5
MB E200K, 184hp - 1.16

A4 1.8TFSI, 160hp - 9.0
bmw 318i, 143hp - 7.8
C180, 156hp - 9.2

A4 2.0T, 220hp (manuel gearbox) - 8.9
325iA, 218hp - 9.0
C200, 184hp - 9.9

As, you can see, despite more power, bimmers are often more fuel efficient. IMO BMW has the edge over Mercedes when it comes to fuel consumption.

No one is sleeping in this business. Its not like BMw is going to stop and saying, lets not improve the fuel consumption anymore
