That's one reason.

The other reason for the yellow bit between 50 and 60 is to remind the driver that at 50 km/h a crash can be fatal. Crash tests done at 50 km/h in the old days have shown that if the driver is not wearing their seatbelt, they can be thrown out of the car at speed. So essentially it is also a warning and a reminder for the driver to wear his belt. This is according to an old ADAC review I once read.

The individual single marks in the form of "I, II, III..." indicate the maximum attainable speed in individual gears for the automatic transmission as there was no RPM limiters fitted to those cars. On our 300SE I can easily over-rev the engine and cause damage, so those things help. To my knowledge manual-transmissioned MBs of that period didn't have this.

Aw Christian. Your knowledge of MB never ceases to astound me.

But what of the two orange markers in the AMG speedo posted by Artist?

It all comes from reading Mercedes Classic magazine where such trivial issues are often addressed and explained.

On that AMG speedo I would think the yellow mark at the 30 km/h section serve as a solid mark for that speed. In many areas in Germany a 30 km/h speed limit is prescribed such as in residential areas (though nowadays it can be as low as 20 km/h), industry parks etc. Just a guess.

I do know that the yellow mark between 50 and 60 km/h is because of what I mentioned above. ADAC reported once on that issue.

And of course the 50 km/h speed limit in cities.
