Crash tests done at 50 km/h in the old days have shown that if the driver is not wearing their seatbelt, they can be thrown out of the car at speed. So essentially it is also a warning and a reminder for the driver to wear his belt. This is according to an old ADAC review I once read. ![]() The individual single marks in the form of "I, II, III..." indicate the maximum attainable speed in individual gears for the automatic transmission as there was no RPM limiters fitted to those cars. On our 300SE I can easily over-rev the engine and cause damage, so those things help. To my knowledge manual-transmissioned MBs of that period didn't have this.
