It does seem true that mercedes have started a new segment in passenger cars...

It ought to say.

"After the flash in the pan success of the CLS, suddenly everyone is having 2nd thoughts."

The CLS has been very successful for MB in many ways. One, it brought back some emotion to the brand with a very sexy design.

It was never supposed to sell in numbers like the E or C, but MB doesn't care, because it is a very profitable car for them because it's underpinnings are from the E, so development costs were low.

And everyone is starting to copy the idea... VW, Audi, BMW... Not sure why the sarcasm tennmb. Sales have slowed down for it because it is in the middle of its cycle, they should pick up with the face lift, but regardless, sales aren't the only measure of success, especially when the car wasn't supposed to sell in huge numbers anyway.

The CLS is an ENORMOUS success. It has established MB among the design leaders again, and has indeed added a lot of class and sexyness to MB line-up. It was never intended to be a chart-breaker, but an image-carrier and an elegance-flagship.

It is the most elegant German car since a very, very long time. It is the German Jaguar.

If the only thing you care about is the sale numbers, then MB Audi and BMW should stop their big sedans and built Punto, Clio, Polo and things like that because they have waay better sales than all what the Germans have.

Nobody can deny what the CLS achieved. It's a masterpiece, and the whole auto industry recognizes the brilliantness of its design and of its concept.

Looks brilliant there. My fav Benz! Not in AMG guise, love it the way it is.

CLS is a success it fits well the Mercedes-Benz brand & portfolio. Imagine Hyundai 4dr coupe - or even the VW CC. I don't think that can work.

CLS is a typical MB coupe: elegant & luxurious. 4dr layout is another extra convenience - fitting good to the luxury nature. Just like 4dr cabrio.

Brands like VW haven't such a flair to justify the 4dr coupe. Even Porsche & Aston Martin moves are questionable - as makers of extremely sporty coupes - than "downgrading" to a 4dr coupe - which I guess is a substitute for a real sedan which does not fit brands like AM or Porsche quite best.

An executive-class 4dr coupe is something that can work in MB case only. All the other may experience numerous troubles. But it can work in case of being more up-scale positioned: eg. Panamera, Rapide, CS. Not sure how the Audi A7 will be positioned. I hope Audi will be smart enough to rebadge the car to A9, and slot it above the A8.

Well Tennmb is a salesman so of course he wants every Benz to sell like C300s, E350s and S550s.

I sell for Mercedes. If any of you guys want to buy one, then hey, I love it!
Actually I do love the CLS. It's a great car, and the workmanship on the interior is fabulous. I think it was a great move by Mercedes and was counter to most of the ways they've gotten products to market.

But they collect dust in the showroom for the most part. It is a love hate car. I get as many, "that's cool" comments as I do, "I can't stand it, it's a bananna." So, in that regard, it is not like the SL that causes everyone to swoon at first glance.

I'd say most of these other companies are having 2nd thoughts after seeing the fast ascent and decent of the CLS. I don't expect any of these others to have the success of the CLS. We were all shocked at the # of CLSs we sold out of the gate. But, it has slowed to a trickle.
