Re: new Mercedes CLS commercial: "suddenly, everyone wants to build a 4-door Coupé

As much as I hate the oxymoron "4-door coupe"... we have to indeed give credit to MB for creating the coupe-ish sedan segment.

So I'd say it's a pretty accurate statement (minus the terminology).

all a bunch of lies

So ... what was first: a 2dr car, or a 4dr car? If the first one, than sedans are actually 4dr coupes. If the second one the coupes are actually 2dr sedans. Etc.

New segments are emerging every now and then - usually as a variant of the existing segment. Nothing new here. And the easiest way to label the new car is to use the reference from the existing segment.

Otherwise the 4dr coupe-looking sedan (eg CLS) could be called a "fdsaghg" instead of 4dr coupe, and a coupeish looking SUV could be called a "etrrytre" instead of SAC. I guess SAC & 4dr coupe labels are much better than the other ones, don't you think?

Re: new Mercedes CLS commercial: "suddenly, everyone wants to build a 4-door Coupé

I don't understand all the thing about "4-door coupe". When I see the CLS it's exactly what I see: a typical coupe, but with 4 doors.

Languages are evolving, the world is moving. Don't stick with old definitions. Today the brands are merging the markets, create crossover cars, and well... new definitions for the niches.

4-Door Coupe is, imo, very accurate for the CLS. It describes it quite exactly.

However, SAV or SAC does not make a lot of sense, it's more a marketing trick. Just like "Sports Tourer" or I don't know what for the R and B-Class.

You're missing the point Eni... the word coupe implies "to cut" (from French), so yeah a coupe is a 2dr sedan (2 doors cut off), but a sedan is not a 4dr coupe (you can't cut here).

The next thing these marketting ppl will make us believe is a 3-sided octogon.

Brands like VW haven't such a flair to justify the 4dr coupe. Even Porsche & Aston Martin moves are questionable - as makers of extremely sporty coupes - than "downgrading" to a 4dr coupe - which I guess is a substitute for a real sedan which does not fit brands like AM or Porsche quite best.

An executive-class 4dr coupe is something that can work in MB case only. All the other may experience numerous troubles. But it can work in case of being more up-scale positioned: eg. Panamera, Rapide, CS. Not sure how the Audi A7 will be positioned. I hope Audi will be smart enough to rebadge the car to A9, and slot it above the A8.
What about BMW's 4dr coupe the 8er or CS? do u think it's gonna be a hit for BMW as CLS did for MB?!

The A7 will most likely be positioned in the same price segment as the CLS.

Passat CC - A7 - Panamera

EXACTLY. You can't call a freaken an apple an orange because they have a similiar profile can you?

A coupe literally means a car that is "cut". A CLS is a SEDAN... 4 doors = sedan. Nothing to do with the roof or profile or any marketing poo

I love how this thing always causes a discussion

Re: new Mercedes CLS commercial: "suddenly, everyone wants to build a 4-door Coupé

Yes it means "cut", not "cut 2 doors".. the fact that it's always been connected to a 2door vehicle doesn't mean that this is the only interpritation of the term.
this discussion could go for ever because everyone would have their own interpritation.. matter of fact, this discussion has been going on since the presentaion of the Vision CLS in 2003, but the bis question remains: who the **** cares what this thing is called?
