Re: New Mercedes direction

I too will miss the old G-Class. A true classic and a car that will go down in history as one of the longest produced civilian and military SUV's. RIP G-Class.

I too am dissapointed with the replacement. It only shares the name "G-Class" but looks like every other SUV out there. It's not unique enough. No doubt it'll sell but I would probably never touch it (a testdrive may change my mind). The old G-Class showed style and heritage. It was a great SUV offroad (not so much onroad) but I think the people who bought it cared more about style and individuality. Arriving at a part in a "so common" M-Class is one thing, but arriving in a G-Class earns you respect and interest (from onlookers) and makes a statement in a way.

From a financial POV however, I don't think keeping the old G-Class made sense for MB. As was said before, it's a low volume vehicle with very low demand and the cost of producing such a car (Austria = high labour wages) etc. wouldn't be worth it in the long run. IT WAS INDEED TIME FOR A NEW G-CLASS. I just wished it had retro styling...

^That "Offroad" SLK looks much better than the regular R170 SLK IMO.^

Troll.

I personally think Merc should keep the general Design of the 463, but upgrade it in a similar fashion to what Land Rover did with the Range rover. Loose the outter door hindges, give it an integrated roof, loose the military style front window (well...baybe keep that, its cool, just integrate it it better with the body) They should give it a new platform and a new interior, but make it even better at what it does best. And refresh it so it looks even better doing so.

Yep, RETRO STYLING basically. I had hoped for that as well.

Well since you wrote that we have got the GL and they have updated the G class.

I still think it's looking old ..but so is the Land Rover Defender.

Mercedes should take some inspiration from Range-Rover

Land Rover Concept X

Re: New Mercedes direction

Interesting that Land Rover would make a Jeep Wrangler style car. Wow. That would probably, if set at the correct price, blow Jeep out of the water.
