Just got the new C class - Round 2

Hi guys it's M. Toni again and some of you may rember me when I did the C 220 CDI W204 review almost a year ago.

I must say it was a fantastic car, went well, 0 major problems, good consumption, but terrible diesel sound from a 4 cylinder engine.

So I decided to trade it in and take the 320 CDI Avantgarde.

And what did I change - well I finally decided to go with a two tone interior, so I went for the black/grey combination and also to lose that damn ALU that everyone is going for. I went for wood and I think it gives the car much more classy look than the cold ALU trim. Somehow I forgot to order the PDC but I can live without that. Now some of you are wondering why didn't I order the 7G Tronic. Well to be honest I had an E 280 CDI Avantgarde as I was waiting for my new car as a loan from the dealer and it had a 7G. It is fantastic it switches gears without a glitch and it is an absolut joy to have. But ther is one little thing it was bothering me - when I was at the dealers service with my previous cars there was allways an ML, CLS or CL with the 7G that broke down and needed the replacement. Sorry but I'm not shelling 6.000 € or something like that for new gears if that happens when the warranty is over. So stick for me. Enjoy the interior photos they where made in a hurry so sorry for bad images - click to enlarge.

But the biggest joy for me is the engine - ahhh that purrr from the V6 is making me feel so much warmer inside. The car is mad it pulls and pulls and pulls. The torque is imense and it never runs out. I bow down to the way diesel technology has become today and gasoline - watch out you have a new player in the field. As for the outside of the car nothing much has changed - oh except for those double exaust pipes on the back. I can't say much for consumption as I only did 100 km so far. So this is my short review and further down you can check the phostos of the E I had as a loan.

The E was OK it also had a V6 but detuned to only around 190 hp. It went OK but it was losing power from 180 - 190 km/h and above and the weight of the car took it's toll. But it had heated and ventilated seats, Bi-xenons that followed corners (I miss this really much it is spectacular when you drive at night), 7G Tronic and PDC. When I compare it to the my C, yes it is a bigger car, more room, more comfort, but the brakes are just crap. On the C class are just razor sharp but when I was braking hard on the E I thought the thing was not going to stop.

It is a shame the E grew on me and the dealer almost persuaded me to take it but it is a rather old design despit it's redesign and all the techno gizmo stuff. And to take into concediration a new one is coming in a years time. Sorry thx but no thx. But I must give it credit it is the E what Mercedes is - classy, timless and a living legend. Maybe next year I'll be checking out the new E but in the mean time - C320 CDI Avantgarde is my choice of weapon - did I forget to meantion it won a golden angel award by ADAC

Nice to hear from you again and it's a shame the engine didn't work out for you. I can blame you for not liking the E. When I test drove an E55 with air suspension last year, I completely fell in love with it. Very comfortable, handles well and had a great engine. If I had money it would maybe even have ended up at my place. And it pretty much looked like the one you have posted, except that it was a pre face lifted one.

But at the end of the day it doesn't look very contemporary amongst the new Benzes, and is not a car to buy if you want a "new" car.

Either way congrats on your new ride and I hope that the manual works out for you and that you don't end up getting annoyed with it at a later stage.

I just noticed that the transmission tunnel plastic between the seats is black, not grey to match the lower part of the dash. I checked pictures of US versions of the car and they also have it black, but if you look at this MBUSA shot you can see the corner of it and it's grey....

To answear yout simple question - I have the Avantgarde version and it has black upoholstery on the doors (bottom part), center console and carpeting (beneath the rugs). The Elegance has everything in gray. This is much more cooler than the dull all grey interior. Also the gear shift leaver is in two tone combo (black and grey) and not all grey as in the Elegance.

Well for the C220 CDI part. It is not just the noise, 170 HP is very nice but 224 HP is nicer right. No joke aside - the C220 CDI went fine to 200 km/h but above it was struggeling to reach 220 km/h and more was really just not ment to be for the C220 CDI. But the C320 CDI has no problem reaching those figures. Also if you drive with 4 or 5 persons with luggage you well fell how the C220 CDI just doesn't like the extra weight that much. On the 320 CDI the more you put in the more car pulls

Don't get me wrong the 220 CDI is a great engine, very powerful for a 2.2 liter, low consumption and it pulls nice. But when you drive a diesel V6 once in a C class you will never want anything else. The torque is mad, the sound is awsome for a diesel and the way you gain your speed is just fantastic.

Now for the E and C comparison. Well E is E hands down, it is bigger more spaceous loking and the luxury factor is two points above C. You have to understand that the C is an entery level, forget A and B they don't count.

The materials are top notch especially if you have the latest and greatest redesigned E. The fell of leather on the seats, steering wheel on the doors is really good and the dashboard is looking a little more quality like than in the C. But that is just the look, build quality in the new C is top notch hands down. The problem why most people think that the interior in the C is plastic looking is beacuse most of them judge by the photos. And once you have a seat in the C you see that it is really a nice place to be. And another problem with this new materials is that they have to be recycle compliant and they most probablly are made out of recycled materials.

But you can see the age of the E, I hate the speddometer and revmeter, they are to small for my liking, the whole dashboard is very nice but again it is showing it's age. I am so happy that the new E is coming in about years time because E really needs a major upgrade. And if you look at the spyshots, most of the materials and design features will be taken from the W204 C class.

I see you drive an E270 CDI, well my friend you have one of the best engines made and I really miss it. It is the best compensation in terms of power, consumption and noise. I really miss why Mercedes doesn't make this 5 cylinder engine anymore insted with the redesign they went with the E280 CDI wich in my opinion is just detuned C320 CDI and in reality a waste of money.

But I also see that you drive an ML 320 CDI and that is a V6 so you see, why I like so much the V6 diesel right

I hope I explained myself to you and now you understand what my issue with the smaller brother was.

But now it's a sunny saturday out here and I'm going for a ride.
