Well the problem with doubling the speed of the computer is that we have no way of cooling it. If it wasn't for the fact that right now, the only feasable (economically) option is air cooled computers, the progress has stalled. If that wasn't a problem, we'd see much faster computers.
I've never used AMD, but I doubt it's bad...a lot of people use it. But personally I've always gone with Intel as it is the safer choice.
