Interior Spy Shots

Clearest Look Yet as the GTR sets it's sights on the Porsche Carrera GT

The Nissan GT-R development team has made another run at the Nürburgring record books this morning--and the Porsche 911 Turbo is no longer its target. Sources intimately familiar with Nissan's latest test sessions inform us that the group is now gunning to beat the Porsche Carrera GT--a remarkably lofty goal considering that that Walter Röhrl reportedly piloted a Carrera GT around the 'Ring in 7 minutes 28 seconds. Another Carrera GT, driven by Horst von Saurma, managed a lap time of 7:32.

Our sources tell us that, thus far, the Nissan has fallen short of the Carrera GT's record-time, but not by much. Our mole tells us that some wet sections of the track slowed them down, and that with optimum track conditions, some heroic driving could still reel in the Porsche Supercar. Nissan reps would not divulge any specific lap times, but they hinted that something under 7:35 may have been achieved. Regardless, it's clear that Nissan's goal of overtaking the 911 Turbo has been achieved in a big way.

Stopwatch drama aside, Nissan also gave us some new eye-candy by removing most of the camouflage that has been a staple of GT-R sightings for more than a year now. Although not in showroom shape, the latest GT-R test cars give us our clearest look yet at the prototype's front bumper and headlights, and the GT-R badge is now prominently displayed in the grille-opening, and on the trunk lid. We also managed a pretty revealing interior shot as one GT-R prepared to launch. The rear vinyl camouflage has also been removed, and now only flat-black paint remains to obscure the GT-R's true styling. This is as close as we're likely to get to an undisguised car until the car's Tokyo Show debut.

In their most recent 'Ring runs, Nissan rented the track early Monday morning, and had three GT-R prototypes--spaced one-minute apart--all taking their best shots. One of the GT-Rs was reportedly driven by Horst von Saurma--the same 'Ring specialist that drove the Carrera GT to a 7:32 lap time. Another driver was said to be a Japanese driver named Shimizu--possibly well-known racer Kazuo Shimizu. The third GT-R pilot went un-named.

Nissan will likely continue their assault on the Nürburgring--and on the Porsche legacy--for the rest of this week. If the GT-R manages to do the seemingly impossible and unseat the Carrera GT, we'll let you know.

Wow, trying to match a CGT! Dare I say they aren't going to be able to do that.

I highly doubt this is a CGT-killer. I've notice some media people totally over-hyping this car.

Nissan publically acknowledged that their reference is the 911 Turbo. It's still unclear whether or not they even managed to match or beat it since no times have been released.

Now I’m confident to say that it would be in the realm of possibility that the GT-R’s design was more successful than expected and that it will eat the Turbo for lunch.

Now after the Turbo, they forgot there’s a GT3, then a GT2… so the necessary leap to go from “beating a Turbo” to going after the CGT is a little much IMHO.

Re: Nissan GT-R (Spy pics & info) - 09-25-2007, 10:59 AM

Nissan has always set the target to beat the fastest lap time around the Ring, but they wasn't too sure in the beginning if it could be done or not, so they lower the target to a 911 Turbo. At 1st I did not believe they can match the Turbo with a bigger car, similar power but around 80-100kg heavier, but now I am starting to believe the Nissan engineers have fine tune the chassis and the GTR is able to match the Turbo. Beating the CGT will be a massive task, even with semi-race spec rubber, the GTR might get close. The car needs more power. 500hp still isn't enough.

More specs and speculation about the Nissan GT-R

When the wraps are finally taken off the new Nissan GT-R in Tokyo next month there'll be little left to reveal, save a few minor exterior elements and a production-ready interior. And as the date draws closer, every piece of banal minutia that hits the web piques our interest and completes the GT-R puzzle.

The newest round of unconfirmed, yet plausible information comes courtesy of the GTChannel, where they've reported a number of facts that we've listed in all their bullet-point glory after the jump.

• The chassis designation will be CBA-R35, the last bit continuing the long-held R-number moniker of previous generations

• Three trim levels: Base, Black Edition and Premium – all equipped with the same VR38DETT twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6

• Everything fit within the engine will be forged

• Six exterior colors: Titanium Gray, Dark Metal Blue, Super Black, Vibrant Red, Ultimate Metal Silver and White Pearl, the last two are classified as premium paints and will command a few extra bucks.

• Two interior colors: Black or Gray, with black appropriately being the only color available on the "Black Edition"

• Rays forged wheels (likely sized 18-inches), coated in chrome and wrapped in Dunlop Sports tires. An upgraded tire and wheel package with gunmetal Rays wheels will be available on the base model, and standard on Black and Premium vehicles.

• Anti-theft and Bose sound will be an option on the base and Black versions, while standard in Premium trim.

• SRS curtain and side airbags will be an option on all three models

As for dimensions, it's been pretty much confirmed that the GT-R will be 4,650mm long (183-inches), with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm (110-inches) and a width of 1,350mm (53-inches). Power is still expected to be in the 450 to 550 HP arena, with a curb weight somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,500 lbs.

We'll be on hand when the veil is lifted in Tokyo at the end of next month, and we'll finally be able to see what five years of development has finally wrought.

They sure are switching targets... the comfortable 997 Turbo or the CGT, what will it be? Time will tell and when it comes to Nissan we better wait untill we get tests performed with standard cars

Funny point is that the new 997 GT2 has already undercut the time set by the CGT. (Porsches own times that is)

If this GT-R doesn't do it, then NISMO in Japan will go BALLS out crazy. I think we will definitely see a R35 GT-R V-Spec II NUR edition in a few years.
