From an emotional standpoint there's no doubt that I'd rank the 330i first. But that's only based on my own personal frame of reference. This new 3's got a snap and a sizzle that so clearly expresses what a car in this segment ought to be like. Its throttle response and handling dynamism are just such vital ingredients in the sport compact recipe and so it has to take the podium in the class that it pretty much defined. Don't discount the C350 though, in typical Merc fashion this car is brutally powerful, unflustered and more exclusive. It has, in my opinion, the best V6 engine in the world coupled with plenty of old-school Mercedes appeal without coming across as dowdy. I tell you what, when I see a C350 Sport come by I give it a long, lingering look because it looks fantastic and is every bit the classiest car in the segment. It's for grown-ups. Pity about the pensioner's interior which is well screwed together but a decade old in terms of form and function. The A4. What can one say about the A4...? This new B7 certainly looks the part, is exquisitely constructed and has the highest quality interior... but is it the segment buster that Audi (or Autobild) lead us to believe? No. The Audi will always be compromised from a driver appeal point of view in that quattro is only an optional extra on an A4. Otherwise you're left with front-wheel drive derivatives... and in this class that counts for a lot despite the fact that more and more consumers couldn't give a rat's arse about "steering feel". So, to the purist the A4's mechanical packaging remains its Achilles Heel from a driver's perspective (only!). Other than that it's the people's champion.

There is no way a 5 year old C class and A4 can beat the E90. E90 has better interior spaces, better steering, better handling and at least equally good engine, transmission and brakes with the others. As for the good reviews C55 AMG got, it's true but then again it lost from Audi S4 and M3 in every single test i have seen including some from US magazines like car and driver so don't get too excited. New A4 and C class may battle the E90. For the time being excisting models loose hands down.

All bias aside, that is a first "Not inexpensive enough, in order to overhaul the competition. Not inexpensive enough, in order to overhaul the competition." ??? |
