Test Audi S3 gegen BMW 130i
Vollgas im Freistaat

Zwei sportliche Kompakte treffen aufeinander: der Audi S3 mit Vierzylinder-Turbo und Allrad, der BMW 130i mit Sechszylinder-Sauger und Heckantrieb. Erster Vergleich der 265-PS-Bayern.

Von Fabian Hoberg: Endlich sind sie wieder auf gleicher Höhe, die beiden bayerischen Kompakten von Audi und BMW. Nachdem die Münchner den 1er mit dem 265 PS starken Sechszylinder voriges Jahr ins Rennen geschickt haben, ziehen die Ingolstädter mit dem gleich starken Audi S3 nach. Wurde aber auch Zeit. Denn der Trend geht eher zu kompakten Sportlern mit üppiger Ausstattung als zu größeren Autos mit dem spartanischen Charme einer Kirchenbank. Ganz gleich, wie die Verpackung aussieht. Und die könnte bei den beiden unterschiedlicher nicht sein. Was sie eint ist die Fahrzeuglänge von knapp 4,2 Metern, fünf Sitzplätze, vier Räder und die Leistung von 265 PS. Das war’s. (Two equal Bavarian competitors are finally being pitted against each other. Inspired by BMW's 265-hp 130i, Audi follows suit with its equally powerful S3. Both cars come well-equipped and both feature the same horsepower output: 265-hp.)



Der Audi S3 sieht im Stand schon schnell aus, unterstreicht den Leistungsunterschied zu seinen "normalen" A3-Brüdern durch Seitenschweller, Front- und Heckschürze, Diffusor und Fahrwerkstieferlegung. Und natürlich durch das S-Kennzeichen schlechthin: die Außenspiegel glänzen in Alu-Optik. Wer die im Rückspiegel in Verbindung mit dem Kühlergrill und Chromzierleisten erblickt, sollte wissen: Der Vierzylinder-Turbo katapultiert den Dreitürer in 5,7 Sekunden auf die 100-km/h-Marke. Damit fährt man sogar einem Porsche Boxster auf und davon! Zumindest bis bei 250 km/h abgeregelt wird. Dabei röchelt und zischt es bei jeder Beschleunigung aus dem Motorraum, als würde ein heiserer Darth Vader um Vergebung winseln. Zu Beginn amüsant, nach einer Weile nervig. (Unlike its normal A3 brothers, the S3 already looks sporty and fast from a visual point of view. The 4-cylinder turbo engine brings the car in 5.7 seconds up to 100 km/h: quicker than a Porsche Boxster. At 250 km/h, the electronics kick in and limit the top speed. Every command sees the turbo engine give a nice scream - like Darth Vader asking for forgiveness. Amusing, initially, after awhile, annoying though.)



Kommt der Motor in den Ladebereich von maximal 1,2 Bar, setzt vehementer Vorschub ein und die Antriebswellen zerren an den vier Rädern. Der S3 profitiert dabei klar durch seinen Allradantrieb und das 25 Millimeter tiefergelegte, aber komfortable Sportfahrwerk. Das beschert ihm merkliche Traktionsvorteile – nicht nur bei Regen. Es ist schon erstaunlich, wie geschwind der Audi ums Eck biegt und die 350 Newtonmeter Drehmoment ab 2500 Touren auf die Straße bringt. Dabei flutschen die Gänge des Sechsganggetriebes geschmeidig und fast wie von selbst durch die Schaltgassen. Auf hohem Niveau zeigt sich der S3 auch innen: Alu-Pedalerie, bequeme Sportsitze sowie Ledervolant mit leichtgängig-präziser Lenkung. (Once the turbo boost reaches 1.2 bar, you feel a powerful push as all four wheels are given a bite of this power. The S3, which is 25mm lower than a standard A3, profits from the AWD setup in terms of traction, especially during the rain. It's also comfortable. 350 Nm of torque are easily put on the ground (already available at 2,500 RPM). The 6-speed manual is precise and smooth. Also high quality is the interior, especially with aluminum pedals, comfortable sport seats and leather. The steering is light but precise.)

Münchner Understatement ist zwar selten, aber im 130i real existent. Der Fünftürer mit dem Sechszylinder und drei Liter Hubraum unterscheidet sich optisch nur unwesentlich von seinen schwächeren Gesellen. Es sei denn, das M-Sportpaket für 2100 Euro wird montiert. Auch wenn er nicht danach aussieht: Er ist der wahre Sportler der beiden, fahraktiver, direkter, kompromissloser abgestimmt und mit straffen Sitzen sowie einer sehr direkten Lenkung gesegnet. Die Schaltung des BMW 130i ist aber störrisch, schnelle Gangwechsel sind Übungssache. Dafür posaunt der Sechszylinder ein Halleluja aus zwei Tüten: kernig und heiser. Und der seidig-elastische Saugmotor bietet ab 2750 Umdrehungen sein volles Drehmoment von 315 Newtonmeter ohne den brutalen Turbo-Einsatz des S3. (Likewise, the sporty BMW 130i is only visually identified over its weaker brothers - unless you pay 2,100 Euro extra for the M sport package. Even though the car doesn't look sporty, it is the true sports car among these two: more agile, direct, sportier suspension and hard seats and a very precise steering feel. The transmission however is pretty poor: smoothness could be better and also takes getting used to. The 6-cylinder sound on the other hand is wonderful. Aggressive and yet quiet. The naturally aspirated BMW engine delivers 315 Nm of torque at 2,750 RPM - without the brutal boost of the turbo S3.)



Seine 265 PS nehmen sich mit 6,1 Sekunden für den 100-km/h-Sprint etwas mehr Zeit als die Pferde des Audi. Bei Regen bekommt der 130i die Kraft allerdings schwer auf die Straße. Bleibt der Preis: Der BMW 130i kostet 32.750 Euro und ist damit auf den ersten Blick 2400 Euro günstiger als der Audi. Der aber begründet seinen Mehrpreis durch bessere Ausstattung: Xenonlicht, Sportfahrwerk, Sportsitze in Stoff und Leder, 18-Zoll-Felgen (BMW: 17 Zoll) und Karosseriekit sind Serie. Spaß machen beide. Vorausgesetzt die weiß-blauen Straßen sind frei. (265-horses in the BMW mean a 0-100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds, a little slower than the Audi. In rainy or wet weather, the 130i is difficult to control however. The BMW costs 32,750 Euro: 2,400 Euros cheaper than the Audi. But the BMW lacks the better equipment spec of the Audi. With the S3, you get Xenonlights, Sport suspension, sport seats in cloth and leather, 18" rims (BMW 17") and a bodykit: all standard. Both cars are fun to drive however.)



Fazit von AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS-Redakteur Fabian Hoberg: Trotz gleicher Leistung und ähnlichem Preis könnten Audi S3 und BMW 130i nicht unterschiedlicher sein: Aus Ingolstadt kommt ein optisch potentes Kerlchen mit der höherwertigen Ausstattung und schönen Details sowie dem Allrad-Antrieb und lautem Turbo-Zwitschern, das durch viel Schub und Traktion begeistert. Aus München kommt zumindest optisch mehr Zurückhaltung. Serienfahrwerk, Lenkung und Sechsganggetriebe sind jedoch deutlich straffer und sportlicher ausgelegt, der Sechszylinder dreht seidig-weich und harmonisch bis an seine Leistungsgrenze. (Overall: Despite similar performance and price, both the Audi S3 and BMW 130i are two different cars. The car from Ingolstadt appears visually more potent and comes with useful standard equipment such as the useful Quattro system. The S3 impresses with good traction and brutal power. From Munich comes a more conservative car. Standard suspension (shared with weaker 1-Series') for one, but a more direct steering feel and a sportier suspension. The 6-cylinder rev's smoothly and is fun to listen to - even at high performance.)

I love both cars, but I think I'd have more fun w/ the S3 despite the lack of steering feel.
