I really don't want a GL63, but I'm sure it is coming. I agree it really is pointless. The ML63 is the only SUV AMG should be doing unless customer demand (and I mean people angry, storming dealerships with checks in their hands) is so great as to where MB has to do a GL63 AMG. I doubt such demand is present. Now the original G55 should get the same engine from the revised SL55 (517hp) for its remaining years because it is already on the market and a cult-classic, and let the ML63 represent the sportier side of MB suvs. No R63 or GL63. Now the R63 I was all for until I saw how much style/aggression the production version lost from that concept at Frankfurt last year.

Enough is a enough and Mercedes would do better spending the money used to develop the GL/R63 models on better interiors for all three cars GL/ML/R and providing more standard features.

Good post. I too couldn't care less in MB lost a comparison to a BMW, since most magazines are so sports biased, they don't see that the point of the E-Class isn't to burn rubber on the racetrack but provide safety and comfort to family's for long distance cruising.

The R and GL AMG versions (well if they make the GL AMG) are pretty pointless IMO. I'm no fan of the G55 AMG and the ML55 AMG, although I would admit that the ML55 AMG is somewhat justified, but I'm still no fan of it. SUV's IMO should be diesel-engine equipped. Modern diesels offer similar performance, more lower end torque (which is more useful than higher end torque) and better fuel economy than a comparable gas engine.

I agree with you Cawimmer. It is honestly pointless to produce a 63version of this suv. As if this suv wasn't going to drink gas enough, the 63 would just straight out drink it. Honestly they would be better off just offering some sort of a sport/appearance package for this. That way you get that agressive/beautiful AMG look without the gaz guzzling aftershocks.

Re: MB GL450 Vs Cadillac Escalade

You guys have raised the practical side of the issue which I agree with but you know a 510hp GL63 is on the way. If MB can create something as pointless as the R63 why not a GL63. Performance is a demand these days
especially here in the US.

Re: MB GL450 Vs Cadillac Escalade

Yeah you're right. I expect an announcement about a GL63 sometime this summer and for it to be on the stand at the Paris autoshow this Sept.

I really wanted an R63, but the production version lost all that aggression of the concept that appeared at Frankfurt last fall.

Interestingly enough I'm really waiting to see what this "facelift" will be like on the original G-Class. I can see a G550 with the new V8 and the G55 should get the revised SC 5.5L V8 from the 07's SL55 and of course the new diesels. Updated interior and some exterior light/bumper/wheel changes to keep the old G as up to date as possible.
