![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The R-class is not my Benz of choice, but I have always liked the idea of it in the line-up. On the other hand, I have always hated the headlights and the fact that it looks more mini-vanish then crossover. Of course the upcoming facelift is a big improvement. The 5GT is a very interesting vehicle because of it's wagon capabilities, but with a some what sporty look. Doesn't seem "as" bulky as the R-class and looks like it would be much more fun to drive. Not to mention is has that "new" factor, which it would stand out much more then the current R-class. If I always had six people with me all the time the R-class would be my choice. But since I don't, I will go with the BMW 5GT. Now when the facelift comes for the R-class I might change my mind.

![]() And voted for F10 Touring. Have to wait for this car - because it is probably the best of comfort and space and will look much better then the 5 GT, although it will never reach the boot space of the S212.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Wow, put 'em both side by side and you can see how minivan-like the R-class is, and subsequently, how un-minivan-like the 5er GT's profile is. Still finding it very difficult to appreciate the face of the R-class, even with the AMG sports package added, and the shape of the D(?)-pillar makes the rear corners of the car look more bulky than sleek. The 5er GT on the other hand has a much more pleasing and interesting face, a side profile which actually ended-up being more sporty than I thought it would be...and yeah the rear-end is bulky, but it's still more interesting than the R's butt. Interior-wise the 5er is streaks ahead, but then again the R's interior is a generation old, so that's very much expected. The 5er GT is just an overall more interesting vehicle. Maybe coz it's a little quirky, a little controversial, or whatever the reasons. Definitely not perfect, but the more you look at it, the better it seems to get...and when put alongside the R-class (and even the E-class Estate in the other thread), the 5er GT begins to make a lot more sense, rather than simply being a design experiment to carve out a new niche. F10 Touring will look excellent just like the E60 and E39 variants have, but in the mean time I very much like the 5er GT, and it gets my vote ahead of the R-class, E-class Estate..and the F10 5er Touring (for now anyways).

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The GT and R class are weird and I bet the 5 touring will look a lot better then the E class does. |

![]() | Holy moly the R needs a major rework ASAP. The interior is laughable now. Thank god for the E-class wagon. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'd take the E estate over both of them.... I'm a bit surprised as to why these were compared...the 5er GT is much closer to the E estate than the R...

![]() | I note that the R is classified as "rear wheel drive" in the comparison - of course this is a mistake on the reviewer's part, as it's all wheel drive. The R has been largely misunderstood, unappreciated and then ignored by the automotive press - who now tend to call it a quirkily styled mini-van. I'd start by listing the numerous copy-cats just out this year and in past years... |
