Yeah, BMW is coming with an even more powerful diesel soon. Mercedes should do the same. Maybe an updated V8 diesel to go against the tri turbo I6 unit...

The 7er interior looks so much better than the S! I strongly believe that the lower part of the centre console of the S looks annoyingly empty.

Other than that, both are fantastic cars! I wouldn't mind any of those two

Mercedes S-Class interior looks more elegant and upmarket - less clutter. The BMW's interior looks a touch more modern and tech-laden.

The BMW's performance to fuel consumption & emissions ratios is far superior - a testament to the best diesel engine in a passenger car today. I also feel that the BMW is the better looking of the two vehicles (by a nose hair) but that's entirely subjective.

I'm a little surprised that despite having less power and less torque and less gears the BMW is faster in acceleration and equal in mid-range times. Is it only because the BMW is 98kg lighter?
I think it would be better for BMW to equip 740d with a V8 4.0L engine rather than a 3.0L engine.

No need for a V8 engine in my opinion. The 6-cylinder is lighter, needs less fuel and has equal data for perfomance and horsepower! The new 6 diesel is just perfect for the 7-series!!

Do you have the power and torque graphs for the two cars? This would go some way to explaining how the BMW is able to extract better performance from its twin-turbo, six cylinder 740d. It's definitely the better option for the diesel engine under the efficient dynamics program.

Diesels and turbocharging are a match made in heaven; the resulting outputs from innovative forced induction shows proven superiority over displacement and cylinder count. Hence, the expected tri-turbo development...
