The Audi has a slighly inferior ergonomy because of too many buttons, its brakes are also slightly less efficient, but that turns out to be better than the BMW's on differently adherent roads. This comparatively not so good performance in the safety department makes the Audi last, depsite the powerful (but a lil' thirstier) motor. Drivetrain's not quite on-par either, even with the air-suspension. The merc is an excellent car, awesome comfort and safety equipment. However, the not-so convincing motor, along with the compromized harmonization with the only 5-gears box, cost it the first place. The BMW offers an excellent motor, an excellent handling, and is not too costly. Only the comfort is not so good.

It's still a good transmission (we have it in our E320) but the E220 CDI would have been so much more convincing (and economical) with the 7Gtronic. I really don't understand why Mercedes didn't combine these two: E220 CDI + 7Gtronic. My guess is that they want to keep the 7Gtronic available only with the higher-end models - which is pretty silly since these days fuel economy is very important and it would also make the E220 CDI a much better car overall. This is the new engine, which I have no experienced yet. If I ever drive it I would like to experience its character.
