Because the fuel economy could also be worse than the 730d depending on how much the higher weight of the S-Class (compared to W212) affects it.

If they really wanted to beat 730d in fuel economy, they should use the Bluetec version (used in E 350 Bluetec) which probably would be less thirsty but it comes with a downside as it only has 155 kW.

But Just_me is right, it's fairly pointless to speculate how the cars would score if they had this engine or that engine.

And how does that affect this particular test? Answer: in no way.

You know I can say I'm certain BMW will soon introduce the 735d (or 740d or whatever they'll call it) which will surely be more fuel efficient than S 420 CDI while still offering similar performance. See the uselessness in such speculation? It doesn't matter yet.

The difference is that engine u r imagining it doesn't exist but the engine i'm talking about does exist and will be offered for the S pretty soon, see the the point?

Note: E 350 CDI has less power than S 320 CDI.
S-Class is heavier than E-Class so naturally the consumption figures will be a bit higher if the S-Class gets the 350 CDI engine.
The E 350 I am sure weighs less than the S320, so you need to factor that into the numbers you are presenting.

I am pretty sure bmer was talking about the 6 cylinder 35d engine that does exist when he talked about 735d not some imaginary v8 diesel.
