The Audi A4 is not only Audi's top selling vehicle, it was also purchased more often in Germany than the BMW 3-Series. 2008 figures for the A4 have been released, with over 98,714 units in Germany. The Audi A6 and Audi TT also topped their segment, with 45,304 and 10,630 vehicle registrations, according to the company.

Audi claims the A4 was second only to the Volkswagen Golf in terms of overall sales in Germany. Both brands are owned by VW. The figures also show a great boost for Audi, with increased sales in Germany, and all of Western Europe. Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler said, "Audi is presently experiencing stronger growth than any other premium brand in the region - and thanks to new models we will maintain this dynamism."

"In a difficult market environment, we want to further expand our market share in Germany and Western Europe."

The 2009 model year Audi A4 was released in April 2008. The '09 S4 Sedan and Avant arrive in European dealerships this quarter.

Not a bad birthday present for Audi's 100-year anniversary. Audi sold more than one million vehicles worldwide last year. BMW still leads them as the global luxury brand, having sold 1.12 million in 2008.

As far as I know A4 been selling better than 3-series in germany last year (2007) as well and regarding Z4, its never been a big seller so no surprise there. The new Z4 will probably change that though.

Those are all lease drivers with cheap standard Audis. I'm not that impressed. Companies buy those Audis because they are so boringly neutral, and BMW and Mercedes are not.
It's the same in Holland, Audi sells more here than either BMW or Mercedes.

funny you should say that because the E46 3 series was the number 1 company car in the uk outselling the 2nd and 3rd most popular saloon cars figures combined!

So I take it the E46 was a very neutral and boring car going by your way of thinking. Personally I thought the E46 was class leading at the time hence it being a best seller. But then again this is a audi we are talking about, an audi a4 can never be a class leader, as ong as the 3 series exists

Another proof Audi are completely obsessed with BMW.

Z4 production has been stopped in the Summer 2008 - consequently the sales were poor.

Regarding A4 & A6 ... Definitely these two products are very attractive - having an edge over rivals: better low-end engines, more spacious cabin, more attractive prices, extremely popular Avant models, more attractive offers for fleet buyers etc.

Btw, usually Audi sold more cars than BMW - until BMW introduced new models like X5, X3, 1er etc. In the times of core models only (3er, 5er, 7er) Audi usually sold more cars.

So, no surprise at all.


I'm still a bit surprised with BMW high sales - since among 3 premium Germans BMW has always been the most niche brand. I guess BMW have gained from new products introduced, and a trend of preference to sporty cars / brands.

Btw, here in our country Audi has outsold BMW & MB 3 to 1, or even 4 to 1 for years now. Despite having less products in product line. Reason: excellent dealer network, great deals, very attractive entry models (eg. A3 & low-end A4), FWD / AWD (people still have RWD-phobia), more family & middle-class image. While BMW & MB hve less attractive low end models (1er & A-class), RWD, less dealerships, a bit higher prices, and specific image: MB as posh & snobbish car, BMW as arrogant & bully car.

Er, no. Far more BMW 3 series (usually "cheap standard" 320d SEs) are 'sold' to fleet buyers and lease companies here in the UK than A4s. This, coupled with huge discounts, helped keep it ahead of the A4 in terms of volume when Audi started taking market share away from BMW in this segment during 2007. Unfortunately they shot themselves in the foot by saturating the used market, impacting residuals and devaluing the brand in many people's eyes. With so many buying on finance and being forced to get out of the cars it's no wonder that BMW sales figures have taken such a pounding here.

Ha ha , i still remember BMW's press release 2 years ago saying that they sold more AWD vehilces than any other luxury manufacturer (see Audi). So it's the exact opposite i would say.
