You know how in the old days people hated a brand because of the people who drove them? Mercedes and BMW are good examples. Some people, especially those who couldn't afford them, became envious of the people who drove them and resorted to bad-mouthing both owners and car or keying the car or ramming their door into the car at a supermarket parking lot etc.
It's the same with Lexus in my case. I dislike most of their fans because of all that BS they claim about other brands.
THE FANS OF THIS BRAND MAKE ME DISLIKE THE BRAND. A few days ago I was watching a thread about the new E-Class on ClubLexus. Many members there complained about the
analog clock in the E-Class dashboard to the left of the speedometer citing that digital clocks are so much better. Well, maybe a digital clock looks good in that boring and overrated GS interior, but an analog clock is a Mercedes tradition first of all and second, most European luxury cars still have analog clocks as it simply looks classier and more stately (and sporty too in some cases). In the minds of those Lexus fanatics, it's "old-fashioned / outdated / useless / gimmicky" because Lexus of course is the leader and innovator and everything that Lexus does is automatically the benchmark (sarcasm intended).
Sure, there are some unbiased and objective Lexus fans out there that truly like Lexus but also
respect other brands. Our very own
Bruce is one of those people for example.
RESPECT is the word I am looking for here. I dislike Lexus, but I also respect them because through them I know that the German brands got a wake-up-call and improved their offerings.
My dislike for Lexus also comes from the fact that people give them way too much credit. Credit for what? Without Toyotas financial assistance Lexus would be a nobody. Lexus didn't have to survive two world wars and start from scratch like BMW and Mercedes (after WW2) for example. I always like to put it this way.
BMW and Mercedes are the kids that went to school and studied hard to get where they are in life. Lexus is the kid that came late to school and copied the homework from BMW and Mercedes to get where it is in life.
Get my analogy? Makes sense IMO.
Furthermore, what really pisses me off are those lame consumer prestige surveys where Porsche is ranked first and
Lexus second before Mercedes and BMW. Lexus ahead of Mercedes and BMW? BMW and Mercedes have history, heritage, motorsport heritage, innovation, safety innovation, global appeal and classic cars - and Lexus, which has none of those things, ranks ahead of them? Huh?
Obviously the masses care about the final product and best value, but that doesn't make Lexus a prestigeous luxury brand in my opinion a la BMW or MB. Heritage and history define the prestige factor of a brand in most cases, especially in the luxury car sector. To me, a Lexus will always be a Toyota in disguise. I can still give credit where credit is due though. They are great cars for good value but they're far from perfect or as balanced as their European rivals.
