I start this thread to read your opinions about it. I´ve always thought the M5 and the rest of M cars were legendary, handmade the first two generations of the M5, and with all they needed to be the cars of my dreams.

But actually you see videos, comprisions... And you see how C63 AMG is fastter and "beter" than M3, how the E 63 AMG state runs faster than M5 touring, or how the S 65 AMG has no rival on its segment.

So, the legendary ///Ms, or the actually more spectacular AMGs?.

I'll have an M car over an AMG car anytime. Just yesterday there was a comparison between the M3 and the C63 on tog gear and that made a few things clear.... If you want a car that goes real fast on a straight line but handles like sh**, than your choice would be the C63. If you want a well balanced car that handles great, and that is the fastest on a track you'll find the M car to be the perfect companion. Even the stig had to fight with the AMG to keep it on track, as did Clarkson... but indeed it's got a real big engine... but there'smore to cars then just the engine...
M cars still rule

C63 'beter'? Says who? The only thing the C63 is better at is the straight line speed. For the rest the M3 is superior at everything. Much better car, much better chassis, MUCH better engine.

Oh god, you just opened Pandora's box. Neither is better, they all offer a different experience.

2 diffrent philosophys..
Me like AMG more..
But i dont think you can call these 2 tuners any more..they are more or less manufacturers..
They dont take existing bimmers or mercs and just tune them..
They make own engines..and more or less everything..
So yeah both rock..
But AMG more cause they make more cars and release them faster..
And as a car enthusiast you cant hate that

If you ask that a few years ago I would have said the BMW M, but now it isn't this easy because AMG has put in much more effort into their cars than before. For me it is impossible to pick which one is better because each of them offers their unique driving experience. However I have to say AMG does build more outrageous cars, the Black series cars are just awesome.

This is like asking what brand you prefer. BMW fanboys will say that BMW builds the best engines and the Merc-dorks will opt for the engines produced by Mercedes.

Very hard to tell, BMW constantly recieve statements of praise for their engines from everywhere (ranging from owners to Engine of the Year awards) butthat does not mean that Mercedes produces lesser engines, just different in character.

The one who likes M more than AMG will see the better advantages in cars of the M-GmbH, the one who has a favour for AMG will see this advantages.

But with each comparison, the main philosophy stays nearly the same. the amg is generally more comfortable, the m-car more sportive. also when the cars of mercedes-amg got more sportive than they have been years ago.

you just have to say: f*** the m from bmw, amg is in each segment the better car

Engine department
I will give the node to the M-Team.
They have consistently delivered more performance per litre of engine displacement.
They have also consistently delivered engines that IMO rev higher and deliver better mpg than AMG.
M-Team always comes up engine wizardries ie varying the HP of the engine a la M5/M6, or varying the response of the throttle a la M3.

In my opinion , the M department approached engine development as a science, whilst AMG seems to adopt the "torque monster" approach.

Chassis Management

Without a doubt in my mind, the M departments is head above the AMG team.

Better is a question about taste. I like both AMG and M but I prefer M car over a AMG. If I had the money I know what I would be driving.

I've driven several AMG's and M's and I like the M's better. They are well-balanced and feels neutral to drive. M has enough acceleration and are fast enough for me. Steering, engine, gearbox has always been better than an AMG.
High-reeving engines, I love it. My concern is what is going to happen to M when they start using Turbos, no more highreeving engines?
