That's because Mercedes expects to sell 96% of their SLKs with an automatic transmission, so there is no incentive to produce a good manual transmission. The 6-speed transmission available with the SLK is terrible. I've driven it and it feels like a typical Mercedes manual transmission: garbage. Source was Auto Motor und Sport from a few years ago.

 Most magazines say that a Mercedes should be ordered with an automatic. It's funny how the best Mercedes manual transmissions are found in the A- and B-Classes.
