That's because Mercedes expects to sell 96% of their SLKs with an automatic transmission, so there is no incentive to produce a good manual transmission. The 6-speed transmission available with the SLK is terrible. I've driven it and it feels like a typical Mercedes manual transmission: garbage.

Source was Auto Motor und Sport from a few years ago.

It wouldnt help MB much to add a manual for SLK, people would still choose a manual Porsche over a manual Mercedes.

Exactly.

Most magazines say that a Mercedes should be ordered with an automatic. It's funny how the best Mercedes manual transmissions are found in the A- and B-Classes.

Well, the article in the AMS…they spoke in high terms of the manual transmission on the SLK 350 - and prefered it over the automatic one!!

I would always prefer the manual one…

I have not driven the facelifted SLK200 Kompressor or SLK350 so I can't comment on it. I've driven the pre-facelift SLK200 Kompressor with the 6-speed and it was horrible.
